Jack's Flashback - The Line
Jack is in his office. He gives Gabriela some papers to sign. He says it's not too late to go back. The tumor is aggressive but her father could lead a normal life for at least another year.Gabriela doesn't want to go back home. She says, "Even if you don't succeed, you're giving us a chance. That's all we wanted." She signs the papers.
They are very close to each other and Jack says he'll come check on her before he scrubs in. Christian bursts in and says, "Am I interrupting?"
Gabriela leaves and Christian tells Jack to be careful. "There's a line, son. You know it's there. And pretending it's not, that would be a mistake."
"Guess you would know," Jack says.
"It may be okay for some people, Jack. But not for you."
Shots Fired
Jack, Locke, and Sawyer use vines to pull themselves up a steep slope. "Are you sure Mike went this way?" Sawyer asks.Locke wants to know why he's asking.
"Oh, I don't know, Mr. Clean," Sawyer says, "I probably would have gone around Mt. Vesuvius."
Locke doesn't answer the question, but asks why Sawyer picked the name Sawyer when James is his real name. He wants to know who he got it from.
"Who says I got it from anybody?"
They hear gunfire in the distance and Jack yells for Michael. Locke whispers for Jack to get down, but instead he takes off in the direction of the gunfire. Locke and Sawyer follow Jack and they stop at a clearing.
Locke sees where a bullet grazed a tree and says that Michael is close. Locke says, "And if he was shooting at someone you want them coming back?"
Sawyer says, "Personally, hell yeah!"
"You said these people were two days across the island," Jack says.
Sawyer says, "Yeah, and they took Cindy less than a mile from our camp."
Locke finds three of Michael's shell casings.
"You boys deaf?" Sawyer asks. "I heard at least 7 shots. You heard, Daniel Boone, what's your count?"
Locke says seven sounds about right.
"It's getting dark," Sawyer says. "Which way did Mike go?"
Locke looks for a trail and Jack says to Sawyer, "You out here for Michael, or is this payback for getting shot?"
"Why are you out here, doc? You got your reasons and I got mine."
Jack's Flashback - Gabriela Kisses Jack
Jack is in the hospital locker room, dressed in scrubs, banging and hitting the lockers. His father comes in and yells his name."I had it!" Jack says. He had gotten all of the tumor.
"He was a sick old man," Christian says, "on the table for seven and a half hours. His heart gave out, it's nobody's fault."
"I've got to go tell her," Jack says.
"Yeah, well, I've already done that," Christian says and Jack gives him an angry look. "Lest you forget I am still Chief of Surgery."
"Where is she?" Jack demands to know, but Christian tells him to go home. He asks again and Christian says that she has gone home.
Jack walks to his car in the parking lot and Gabriela gets out of a nearby car. "Gabriela, my father told me that you'd gone."
She thanks him for trying and then begins to cry. He hugs her and tells her he is sorry. They kiss. First Jack is into the kiss, then he pulls away and says he can't. He walks away.
Mr. Friendly
"What do you mean you're lost?" Sawyer asks Locke."He's a man, not a boar," Locke says. "The signs are more subtle. I need light to follow it."
Jack gives them torches, but Locke thinks they should head back. "Just find the trail, John," Jack says.
Locke says he's lost it and Jack says that he just doesn't want to find Michael. Locke says, "You're not going to get him to come back and you know it."
Jack says, "You know what happens if we just turn around and go back? We're never going to see him again. And that's going to be on us. On you and on me."
A voice comes from behind some trees. "You're exactly right, Jack. But if I were you, I'd listen to Mr. Locke." It's "Mr. Friendly", the bearded man who took Walt.
"Who are you?" Jack asks and Sawyer says he's the one who shot him. Locke, Sawyer, and Jack all have their guns pointed at Mr. Friendly.
"Why don't you point the gun down?" Mr. Friendly says. But Sawyer keeps the gun pointed and walks toward him. A gun shot from in the jungle is heard and the bullet grazes Sawyer's ear, causing him to bleed.
Jack and Locke look around, but can't see the shooter. Jack asks where Michael is and Mr. Friendly says, "Don't worry about Michael. He's not going to find us." Jack asks what he wants and Mr. Friendly says, "Why don't you build us a fire, John? I think it's time we all had a talk."
