Flashbacks in Italics
A blip, blip, blip sounds and an eye opens. A man (we don't see his face) jumps out of the top bunk and goes to a computer. It has an old style green curser. The man types something in and presses a well worn "execute" button.
He chooses a Mama Cass vinyl and puts it on the record player. He goes about the morning, washing dishes, checking laundry, and working out on an old style exercise bike, going about 16 miles per hour. He injects himself with some kind of medication that has the numbers on the bottle. He hears an explosion.
He grabs weapons from a vault, turns the lights down, and looks through a scope. He adjusts mirrors that go through long pipe-like hallways. We see a mirror pointing upwards and zoom in then go to the top of the hatch. Jack and Locke, holding torches, stare down into the blackness of the blown open hatch.
Doomed
At the top of the hatch, Hurley repeats the numbers over and over, occasionally interjecting a we're doomed, or we're dead. Kate asks if he's okay.Kate peers into the hatch with Jack and Locke. "What is it?" she asks.
"It doesn't matter what it is," Jack says. "We blew the door so we could get everyone inside so we could be safe. That plan is not going to work. We'll never get everyone down in time."
Locke drops a rock into the hatch and they hear a splash. "Water," Kate says. Locke says it sounds shallow, like a puddle. Kate estimates it's 40 feet down and Locke says it's 50 tops. They discuss rigging a harness, but Jack says they are leaving and Hurley wholeheartedly agrees.
Locke disagrees. "We all went through a lot to get here, Jack," he says.
Jack says, "The ladder's broken. You going to lower 40 people down there one by one?"
They argue, but Jack is adamant that they go back. Locke finally agrees, but says, "Why don't you want to go down there, Jack?"
Jack's Flashback - Jack's Decision
A woman is wheeled into the ER with something metal sticking out of her stomach. The EMT says, "Female, late 20s, no ID, she coded twice on the way over here."A nurse asks about the other one and the EMT says, "Right behind us. Fire Department had to use the jaws."
Jack comes in and takes charge. He asks the nurse to page his father. The EMT says the woman's tire blew and the car jumped the divider and went head-on with an SUV.
"Pericardial's pierced," Jack says.
Another EMT wheels in a second patient. "Adam Rutherford, 57, chest trauma, no breath sounds."
Jack tells an intern to tube Mr. Rutherford, but the intern says he can't. Jack has to decide which patient to work on, and sticks with the woman. Jack works on her as Mr. Rutherford flatlines. They list his time of death as 8:15 a.m.
The woman says something that the nurse can't hear and Jack says, "She said she has to dance at her wedding."
No Others
Charlie tells everyone that there are no Others and that the French woman is "missing a bloody wing nut." Sayid raises an eyebrow and Charlie asks him, "What?""Nothing," Sayid says.
Shannon asks everyone if they have seen the dog, Vincent. No one has and she starts to leave. Sayid asks where she's going and she says, "I lost the damn dog."
Quarantine
"Why'd you do that? Why'd you light the fuse, man?" Hurley asks Locke."Why wouldn't I light the fuse?" Locke asks
"Maybe because I was running towards you, waving my arms, yelling, 'Don't do that!'," Hurley says.
Locke laughs. "Well, you've got a point there. I guess I was just excited to get inside."
Kate notices that the inside of the hatch door says "Quarantine".
