Chapter 38:
On the way to the funeral, Pru and Paul talk about Vivian Widmore's Thursday night trips to a hotel, the reason Cliff had hired Pru in the first place. They both believe that this mystery has something to do with blackmail.
At the funeral, Pru and Paul separate. Pru stays around the outside of the grave circle, while Paul stays as close as he can to Zander. A car pulls up and Pru sees a gun come out the window. She yells to Paul, and Paul tackles Zander. After he hits the ground, Paul realizes that he's been shot in the shoulder. Pru shoots out the windshield and one of the tires. The car stops and the man inside throws out a gun. When he gets out, Pru and Paul are not surprised to see that it's Vivian's Thursday night man. He is suddenly shot by Vivian, who drops the gun on the ground and says, "My first husband. I'm happy to be done with him."
Chapter 39:
Paul visits Vivian in jail and Zander in the hospital where his father was having surgery. Paul tells Pru and Manny everything he'd learned. Vivian's ex-husband was part of the mob and he left when he found out the mob would kill him. Everyone, including Vivian, believed him dead. When he came back, Vivian was still in love with him and met him every Thursday night. She gave him money.
Cliff found out about Vivian's affair. He blackmailed the ex-husband to kill Zander because Zander had planned to get rid of his half of the inheritance. The fight between Zander and his father was that Zander wanted to get rid of the money because it made everyone unhappy. Even with half the money, Cliff would lose control because other shareholders would gain power.
The ex-husband realized that with both twins dead, Vivian would inherit the fortune and when Arthur Widmore died, he would be free to marry her. Vivian realized too late what he'd been planning, and that's why she killed her ex-husband.
