Chapter 21:
Paul goes to the hotel that the captain mentioned and knocks on door. The man says they aren't open, so Paul says he has a meeting. The man asks with who, and Paul says that Zander Widmore sent him. He gains entry where he finds another man with two bodyguards who says he wasn't expecting him so soon, but soon realizes that Paul is not who he thought. He won't tell Paul who he is, where Zander is, or what their business is about. He has his bodyguards take Paul back to the boat.
Chapter 22:
Paul goes back home and finds his friend Manny and their dog Argos in the park. While they are talking, Paul's phone rings. It's Sky. She's called to tell him that the boat he'd been on the day before was blown up and the captain of the boat died. She also says that life is too short and that she wishes she had taken Paul to her bed. He says he wishes the same thing.
Chapter 23:
Paul calls Cliff Widmore's office and after being put on hold, he's told that Cliff is in a meeting. Paul asks when the meeting will be over and the secretary won't say. Paul gets angry and says that he'll be there in half an hour and wait as long as it takes to see Cliff. The secretary has him hold again, then Cliff comes on the phone. He says he's got a busy day and asks if they could talk tomorrow. Paul says he'll be there to talk to Cliff and his father.
Paul sees how rudely Cliff treats his father. During their meeting, the two argue about the board, and two names come up, Alvar Hanso10 and Peter Miittlework11. Vivian Widmore calls Arthur and tells him that Zander called. He's in California and he sounds upset. She says that during their conversation the line went dead.
Paul tells Manny that he is going to California and they talk briefly about the case before Paul leaves.
Chapter 24:
Artisan drives through Mr. Clucks12 for dinner and then continues on to a little village, where he spends the night. The next morning, Joe, the police chief from the island where Moth lived, calls. He asks if the name Alexander Widmore means anything to Paul. The two exchange information and Paul believes that Moth was the person the guy in Havana was waiting for. Moth had a bunch of papers, including power of attorney over Alexander Widmore.
Chapter 25:
Paul goes to the Helio Foundation to look for Zander. He is unaware that it is a nudist colony, and reluctantly takes off his clothes to enter. He finds the director, Elio, and asks about Zander. The director at first tells him nothing and speaks of the philosopher John Locke13. Eventually Elio tells Paul that Zander is in Australia14.
Chapter 26:
Paul calls Cliff Widmore to tell him that Paul is going to Australia. Cliff wonders if it's even worth it, which makes Paul suspicious. Paul is not going to give up now.
Paul calls his friend Manny to tell him that he won't be home for awhile. Manny suggests that Arthur Widmore thinks like they did in the old days of Scotland, and wonders if he plans to give his fortune over to his eldest son. Manny did some research and found out that Zander is older by 2315 minutes, but the twins have a different birthday, being born on either side of midnight. Paul realizes that this gives Cliff a motive to get rid of Zander and wonders if he is finding Zander so that Cliff can murder Zander.
Chapter 27:
Cliff books Paul a first class flight. On the way to Australia, he meets an Australian woman named Prudence who shares champagne and sleeping pills with him. Their flight attendant, Cindy16, keeps their glasses full and they fall asleep with Pru's head on Paul's shoulder. Towards the end of the flight, she asks Paul if she can show him around "The Rocks".
Chapter 28:
Paul spends the day with Pru, and after they make love twice, he notices the gun in her purse when she goes to the bathroom. He pulls the gun on her when she comes out and finds out that she was hired by Cliff Widmore to keep an eye on him because he was getting too close to the truth. Cliff had hired him because his father wanted a detective and Cliff figured Paul wouldn't get the job done. Pru says she's resigning from the Widmore job and writes down a number for Paul to reach her at her sister's house in Australia.
