Paul asks what the fight had been about, but Arthur doesn't want to tell him. By the end of the evening, Arthur invites Paul to stay the night and Paul had so much to drink that he thinks it's a good idea. He goes to the guest room, where Arthur's wife Vivian finds him. Wearing a skimpy nightgown, Vivian asks if he needs anything, but Paul says no and goes to sleep wondering what it would be like to have her in his bed.

Chapter 13:
The next day, Paul gets up and leaves, seeing no one but the servant. He goes straight to the office and takes a phone call from Cliff. Cliff says that his father is getting senile and most of what Paul heard was rehearsed. He also asks if Vivian came on to him, and Paul doesn't answer. Paul says that he is going to Florida to continue his search for Zander and Cliff seems relieved that Paul will be out of town. Paul asks if Cliff knows what the argument between Zander and their father was and Cliff says he does, but that it's not important.

Paul talks with his friend, Manny Weisman, as they take their shared dog for a walk. Manny suggests the idea that Cliff is really Zander and that Zander may have killed Cliff's wife, who would be the only one to be able to tell the identical twins apart. Their father isn't in the best mental shape and could maybe be fooled. Paul begins to believe the possibility that Zander has taken over Cliff's identity and that Cliff may be dead.

Chapter 14:
Paul goes to the morgue to talk to the coroner. The coroner says that he was pressured into wrapping up Shannon Widmore's case quickly. He wasn't asked to falsify documents, but he had to rush more than he would have liked. He tells Paul that there is a possibility that she was already drunk and stoned and someone she trusted put her in the car, sealed off the garage with towels and started the car. In her state of drunkenness, it would have been hard for her to do all that herself.

Paul visits Arthur and Vivian Widmore again. He asks Arthur if Cliff seemed any different after the funeral and Arthur wants to know what that has to do with Zander. Paul says that he's worried about Cliff. Arthur defers to his wife who says that Cliff is very busy and they don't see him much.

Chapter 15:
Paul researches Shannon Widmore and the Arthur/Vivian wedding, but doesn't turn up anything of interest. Then he goes and talks with his friend Manny, who brings up the idea purgatory9.

During his talk with Manny, Paul's cell phone rings. It's Zander's friend Moth, who says Zander just called and it sounded like he was in trouble. Then Paul hears a crack followed by a crash and the line goes dead.

Chapter 16:
For the first time in a long time, Paul packs his 9mm. As he gets to the island, Paul hears that Moth is dead. A boat had fallen on him in his shop. Paul talks to the police chief and asks if these things tend to happen. The chief says a boat has never fallen on anyone on that island.

Driving home, Paul realizes that Moth was about to tell him something important and now he is dead. The next logical person to kill is Paul. He begins to feel fear and then courage.

Chapter 17:
Paul goes to Key West and waits for a Yoga class to end. He tells the instructor that he's looking for a Yoga teacher, but he doesn't know her name. The teacher says that the Yoga instructor he's looking for is Sky, but who he's really looking for is Zandor Widmore. He is amazed by this and guesses that she is Sky. He asks for her help and she asks for a martini.

Chapter 18:
Paul and the yoga teacher, Sky, go for a drink. She wants to know why Paul is looking for Zander and Paul suddenly realizes it's not for the money. He really wants to know what has happened to Zander. He is told that Zander was in town only a couple of days ago and is relieved because that means there must be two, and not one twin playing the part of Cliff and Zander. He asks if she saw him and she says no, she just talked to him on the phone. He said he was going to Havana. When Paul had talked to Moth on the night Moth died, Moth had said that he'd talked to Zander who was on a boat between Key West and Havana.

Chapter 19:
Paul finds a man who took another man via boat to Havana. The description doesn't exactly match Zander, but Paul pays the man to take him to Havana as well to check it out.

Chapter 20:
Paul is on his way via boat to Havana. The captain of the boat becomes much friendlier once they are on the water and tells Paul how he "trades", meaning he smuggles things in from Cuba. Paul asks if the guy he brought over was also in the business of "trade", but the captain just says he doesn't speak to clients about other clients.

9The idea of purgatory comes up several times in this book, and has been a popular theory among Lost theorists, but the producers have said that the castaways are not in purgatory.
