Bad Twin Synopsis and Lost References

Bad Twin is a fictional book written by a fictional character. According to the storyline in Lost, Bad Twin author, Gary Troup, was on Flight 815. He survived the crash, but shortly after got too close to the turbine of the plane and was sucked up into it, causing the engine to explode.

On the show, we saw both Hurley and Sawyer reading the manuscript of Bad Twin at different times. The book was published in real life in 2006 by Hyperion Books (Bad Twin review).

Note from Editors:
En route from Sydney to Los Angeles, Gary Troup's plane went down. He'd had a relationship with flight attendant Cindy Chandler.

Chapter 1:
Paul Artisan disguises himself in tennis clothes and easily gets into a country club, where he photographs Sally Handler1 serving a tennis ball. An insurance company would pay him $500 for the photo because Sally had brought a fraudulent five-million-dollar suit against her orthopedic surgeon.


Chapter 2:
Paul had become a private eye because he was a romantic and thought himself a righter of wrongs. He wanted to prove cynics wrong.


Chapter 3:
Paul meets a well dressed man who wants to hire him. The man is looking for his brother, his identical twin. Paul asks if anyone would want to hurt the missing person and the man says pretty much anyone who meets him.


Chapter 4:
Paul asks the man what is different about he and his twin brother. The answer is that they are mirror twins. He is right handed, while his brother is a lefty. He asks Paul to find his brother and says that money is no object. Paul is surprised. Normally his clients run out of money. He tries to talk the man out of using his services in favor of a bigger firm with multiple employees instead of Paul, who works by himself. The man says that discretion is of the upmost importance and that is why he is not going with a large firm. He finally introduces himself as Cliff Widmore2.


Chapter 5:
Paul goes home and then takes a walk with his 76 year old best friend and their 14 year old dog. The best friend, Manny Weissman, lives a few doors down from Paul and was one of his college professors. Manny encourages Paul to take the Widmore job.


Chapter 6:
Paul decides to take the Widmore job and goes to see Cliff Widmore in his high-rise building. Paul steps off the elevator on the wrong floor and finds himself at the Hanso Foundation3. He then gets back in the elevator and finds the office of Cliff Widmore. Cliff tells Paul how much he appreciates Paul taking the job.


Chapter 7:
Cliff tells Paul that his brothers name is "Zander" as in "Alexander"4. Zander was a rebel, but their father seemed to like that. Zander got into Yale, thanks to money, but never went to class. He read weird mystical books.


Chapter 8:
Cliff tells Paul how Zander kept getting money from their father for various ventures that all failed. Then Zander returned and their father was overjoyed. Zander started in the family business and even began dressing respectable, borrowing Cliff's clothes. Cliff began to suspect that Zander might be taking bribes. Then on April 15th5, he disappeared. Cliff remembers the date because the last time he saw Zander was at Cliff's wife's funeral. Cliff and his wife, Shannon6, were not close and he doesn't know why she killed herself.


Chapter 9:
Paul talks to his friend, Manny Weissman, who tells him the story of the prodigal son. To the good son it seems that the father favors the returned son.


Chapter 10:
Paul heads out to Peconiquot Island to find one of Zander's friends. He finds the man, whom everyone calls Moth7 working on a boat called Escape Hatch8. Moth doesn't seem to know where Zander is, but he tells Paul that Zander and Cliff's late wife, Shannon, had a bond. Paul asks if they were having an affair, but Moth seemed not to understand the question.


Chapter 11:
Paul goes to Cliff's father's home. He meets the father, Arthur Widmore, and his third wife, Vivian. The older man takes a liking to Paul and asks him to stay for dinner. Paul accepts.


Chapter 12:
During dinner, Paul drinks lots of wine. He asks about Zander. Arthur Widmore says that he and Zander had had a fight just before Zander disappeared and he wanted to tell Zander that he thought Zander was right.

1Handler is the last name of the Tailie, Cindy, who was a flight attendant on Flight 815.

2In season two, the name Widmore became important because it was the brand name on Sun's pregnancy test (Ep: 2x16, The Whole Truth) and was seen in the background of one of Charlie's flashbacks (Ep: 2x12, Fire + Water). Widmore may be the name of the construction company that Michael worked for.

3The Orientation film that Locke and Jack watch is copyrighted by The Hanso Foundation. On the film, the narrator says that Alvar Hanso, a Danish industrialist and munitions magnate, provided the finances to back a multi-purpose social science research facility. (Ep: 2x3, Orientation)

4Danielle Rousseau's daughter, Alex, was taken from her a week after she was born on the island.

5Four (April) and 15 are two of the mysterious numbers that keep showing up on Lost.

6Shannon is the name of one of seasons one and two main characters.

7In season one, a Charlie centric episode, in which Locke helped Charlie give up heroin, was titled The Moth.(Ep: 1x7)

8 Locke and Boone find a hatch on the island.
