Mrs. Toomey
Episode 1x18, Numbers - Flashback 6Hurley is in the middle of nowhere and knocks on the door of a house. An older woman answers and Hurley asks for Sam Toomey. Sam has been dead for 4 years, but she is his wife.
Hurley tells her that her husband worked with a guy he knows, Leonard Sims.
"That's right," she says. "They served together in the U.S. Navy."
Hurley asks about the numbers and she says, "Sam and Leonard were stationed at a listening post monitoring long wave transmissions out of the Pacific. Boring job. Sam hated it. Nothing to do but listen to static night after night. 'Til one night, about 16 years ago, there's something in the static, a voice comes through, a voice repeating those numbers over and over again. A couple of days later we're at the fair in Kalgoorlie and some wally there has got this jar, must have been big as a pony, and it's filled to the rim with beans. Fella's offering 50 grand to anyone able to guess how many beans are in that jar, within 10."
Hurley says, "Sam used the numbers?"
"Yep, the answer was exact, to the bean. So we won the money. On the way home a pick-up truck blows a tire on the highway, hits us head on. Lost my leg that night."
He asks about Sam and she says that he didn't even get a scratch and that from then on he believed that anything bad that happened around them was because of him and the numbers. He moved them out there to try and make it stop, but it didn't stop until he put a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.
Hurley says he believes he's under the same curse, but she doesn't believe in curses and says, "You make your own luck, Mr. Reyes."
Making His Flight
Ep 1x24, Exodus Part 2 - Flashback 1Hurley wakes in a hotel room and looks at the alarm clock. It's blank. He turns on the lamp, but nothing happens. He gets up and opens the curtains to see that it's daylight. The electrical outlet has burned.
Hurley frantically packs and picks up the phone, saying, "I need my car. Twenty minutes? Look, I can't miss my flight. My mom's birthday is tomorrow."
Hurley runs to the elevator, but it's full. He runs for the stairs and we see Charlie in the elevator. Charlie yells, "Some of us have a bloody flight to make."
Hurley runs through the hotel lobby, and gets to his car, but on the way his car breaks down, so he jumps out and runs. Huffing and puffing and very sweaty, he arrives at the check-in desk. The ticket agent starts checking him in.
Hurley says, "Any way we can hurry that up? My mom's birthday is tomorrow. Or, today, I don't know. I don't really get the whole time change thing, but I've got to make that flight."
She says he's confirmed but the airline has a policy that a man his size has to purchase two tickets. Hurley complains that he didn't have to do that on the flight out here, but buys the second ticket.
"Uh-oh," the ticket agent says. "It appears that your flight is already boarding in the Oceanic international terminal. Well, this is the domestic terminal. I don't think you're meant to make this flight, dear."
Hurley again runs through the airport. He cuts to the front of the security line, but the guard makes him go to the end of the line.
We see Arzt in the same line, ahead of Hurley.
Once through security, Hurley sees a guy on a motorized scooter and gives him $1600 for it.
Hurley makes it to gate number 23, but the gate agent says that the jet way is closed. Hurley begs and she calls someone, then says, "This is your lucky day," and lets Hurley through.
Jacob
Episode 5x16, The IncidentHurley is being released from prison and given his possessions. He tells the officer, "You don't understand, this is a big mistake. I killed people."
He holds up a piece of paper. "See this? This is a discharge form. You've been cleared. So take your stuff and go."
"Dude, there are men with tranquilizer guns hunting me down. They want to take me somewhere against my will."
"There's a cab stand out front."
Hurley goes out front and opens the cab door. He apologizes when he realizes a man is in the cab. It's Jacob and he says that he's only going a few blocks and they can share. Hurley gets in and the cab drives away.
Hurley offers Jacob some of his fruit roll, but Jacob declines. "So what were you in for?" Hurley asks.
"Excuse me?"
"Jail. I was there cause I killed three people. Well, I didn't really, I guess they figured it out. What about you?"
"Oh, I wasn't in jail."
"Well then, what were you doing sitting outside a prison in a cab?"
"I was waiting for you, Hugo."
"Oh, then you must be dead."
"I'm definitely not dead."
"Well then, what do you want from me?"
"I want to know why you won't go back to the island."
"Because I'm cursed.
"Is that so?"
"Yeah. That's why the plane crashed and my friends died, Libby and Charlie and now they visit me and I can't make it stop."
"Well what if you weren't cursed? What if you were blessed?"
"What do you mean blessed?"
"Well, you get to talk to the people you've lost. Seems like a pretty wonderful thing to me."
"Sure it's wonderful, except for the part where I'm crazy."
"I've got some news for you, Hugo, and you're just going to have to take my word for it. Hugo, you are not crazy."
"Who are you, dude?"
"I'm just up here on the corner," he tells the driver. "Ajira Airways Flight 316 out of LAX. It leaves in 24 hours. All you have to do is be on that plane. It's your choice, Hugo, you don't have to do anything you don't want to." He gets out.
"Wait, you forgot your guitar."
"It's not my guitar"
