In the first encounter between Desmond and Eloise in episode 3x8, Flashes Before Your Eyes, were they in the afterlife? Eloise sought to keep Desmond apart from Penny in that episode, just as she did in the sideways timeline, and we know the latter was the afterlife. Did she do this because Desmond would have discovered where he really was if he tried to change the past and marry Penny?

I’m convinced that this was the afterlife. In real life, how could Eloise have predicted the exact jewelry store where Desmond would shop, or arranged to be working there just when he showed up?

What happened outside the jewelry store also points to the afterlife, I think. How could Eloise have known in advance that the man wearing red sneakers would be crushed? I think Eloise made it happen (or at least appear to happen) because she knew it was the afterlife and she had the power to create images to deceive people.

i dont think it was the afterlife. in the ring store, desmond knew and loved penny. in the sideways, he didn’t know penny, only after meeting her at the stadium did he remember her.

i think she, like desmond, saw flashes of the future. so he had always met her in the ring shop, but she saw flashes to know that he wasnt supposed to marry her and thats why she behaved the way that she did.

I think that the first time Elois met Desmond, she had the note from her son she picked up right after she killed her own son.

So basically she and her boyfriend Charles Widmore knew what was to (or supposed to or ought to) happen to Faraday and perhaps to Desmond, too.

Somehow they needed to get things arranged so that they happen the way the note says “have happened”.

That is why she pushed Desmond to leave Penny etc.

I hope my poor English skill did not get in the way of me trying to explaining it to you guys.

MNM,

Your English is fine.

I don’t think that Daniel Faraday knew so many details about Desmond’s personal life, such as his relationship with Penny or where he shopped for a ring. So it seems unlikely to me that Eloise could have learned these things from Faraday’s journal.

When Desmond and Faraday met in 1996, Desmond never spoke Penny’s name in Faraday’s presence. Desmond said to Faraday, “I’m calling my bloody constant,” but he didn’t say who it was. When Desmond phoned Penny from the freighter in year 2004, Faraday wasn’t there to hear her name; Faraday was on the island. And Faraday couldn’t have known about the construction accident (that killed the man wearing red sneakers) or written about that in his book.

Eloise knew before anyone else that the sideways timeline was really the afterlife, and she tried to conceal this fact from Desmond. I think this was true of their first encounter at the jewelry store, too.

My theory has one possible weakness. In the episode “Catch 22,” we saw a photograph of Eloise with the abbot of Desmond’s monastery. What does this mean?

Catch 22 and Purge are two hot episodes I could not recently rewatch. I guess I will have to run Lost marathon again after all.

Oooohh, I had forgotten about this. Actually for the first time I can’t make any sense out of it. It really seems unexplainable with what we know.
