Unanswered 'Lost' Question - How did Lapidus know the coordinates?

From , Former About.com GuideOctober 12, 2010

In the final episode, The End, how did Lapidus know the coordinates to get off the island if the island moved since Faraday figured out the coordinates? Also, we never knew if they got off the island. Did they?

I don't know about the coordinates, perhaps they were close enough to get them off the island with minimal disturbance. I do believe that they got off the island. Kate said she missed Jack, which I took to mean it was a long time between Jack's death and Kate's death.

I agree Bonnie, it’s also one of those things where the writers put it in the end and figured it was just a climatic moment that Sawyer and Clair got on the plane on time before it left them on the island forever and Jack seeing them fly over the island as he closed his eyes was supposed to be sufficient enough

But it would be really interesting to know what Lapidus, Sawyer, Richard, Claire, Miles and Kate did after they escaped the island for the final time?

ANOTHER FUN QUESTION BONNIE:

Do you think The Losties that escaped on the Ajira plane ever came back to visit, or do you think Hurley and Ben ever visited them? What if it was like the first time they left and they all wanted to come back again?

Just looked back at “The End” Recap, didn’t see any mention of knowing the islands coordinates. I was thinking you needed coordinates to find the island, but only a bearing( a particular direction) to leave. Also the island was in distress when they were taking off. Perahps the got off the ground at a time when nothing special at all was required, before Jack relaced the cork.

I don’t think the electromagnetic qualities of the island were in effect when it was uncorked. Therefore they didn’t need coordinates because just for a moment the island wasn’t special anymore. It was just an island.

Albeit, a sinking island ;)

That’s what I would think too, except the cork was replaced before the plane left. Jack replaced the cork, was washed out of the cave, stumbled to the bamboo forest, and fell down, and then saw the plane fly away. So the cork had been in place for quite awhile before the plane left.

Call me crazy but I think the only “logical” explanation is that the special coordinates were somehow “linked” to Jacob and maybe even Smokey too. Jacob was clearly trying to hide (protect) the island and some might argue that Smokey was too. In either case, when Jacob (and maybe Smokey) died, the “hold” on the special coordinates no longer existed; thus, Lapidus was free to fly straight out. Sincerely, Lostman…..

agree with Lost Man

Ben said Jacob had his own rules, which were that no one could leave the island. that’s why jacob had certain coordinates that could only be used to to leave the island. when he died, his rules did as well. and Ben told Hurley he could make his own rules.

therefore, the coordinates didnt exist anymore, and people could freely leave the island

I can’t quite use that as the official answer yet guys, because what about when Claudia shipwrecked on the island, did her crew know where they were going or did they magically stumble upon the island? and Mother told MIB that there is nothing across the sea, why would she tell MIB and Jacob this? she never wanted them to leave. Do you think they could have left freely before Jacob assumed leadership? and i’m sure Claudia’s crew attempted to leave the island at some point when they were there, and probably kept going in circles as well. That’s why Mother torched the village.

I still don’t think the coordinates had that much to do with leaving the island. When you leave you are where you are – but you had to leave on a particular bearing. You can get the bearing from a compass – or from calculations between 2 known coordinates. I don’t think they really knew where they were going
when they left – but they could have known their location from an on board gps and calculated a bearing, if they had a destination. Seems like the island’s big time magnetic field would have played hell with a compass. I just think they split, flew around for a while – then made radio contact with someone and were guided to safety. Anyway having the coordinates of where you are won’t help you go anywhere unless you have coordinates of where you are going. But if you don’t know where you are you certianly don’t know where you are going. This makes no sense at all. I can’t even agree with myself. Lost is still confusing.

I can’t accept that the coordinates required to depart the island are dependent upon Jacob or MIB. They had to do with the electromagnetic conditions on the island and those existed before those two arrived.

The island being “disconnected” may have been relevant but obviously they were still flying over the island after it had been reconnected, so probably not.

Let’s do remember that it was indicated Lapidus had a role to play regarding the island: He was supposed to fly the Oceanic flight that crashed there and the smoke monster killed the substitute pilot. He ended up piloting the Ajira flight that brought the people back to the island and was able to land the plane well enough so that it could take off again. Maybe he just had a special quality that enabled him to come and go from the island when others could not.

Regarding what happened to the passengers who made it off: it is a story waiting to be created. Someone in my area was featured on the local news because she collaborated online to write a novel about Desmond’s life after he returned from the island. I envision a love triangle between Claire, Miles, and Richard, but Richard having too many withdrawal symptoms from being off the island and needing to return to it, so Miles ending up with Claire, but Richard still involved with their lives, as he tries to prevail upon Claire that Aaron is needed to play a role regarding the island. Anyone else want to try to cash in?

Jimm, I don’t think Sawyer would end up with Kate. I don’t really have any ideas about what those two would do.

Well Kate and Sawyer hooking up is easy enough to envision, but I don’t see them being together as a couple.

If I were to try to actually construct any story regarding the post-island life of the characters I would want to focus on Claire–va va va voom!

Perhaps the GPS of the plane is hooked up to the Lighthouse’s tracking system that has allowed two guys in Guam to send supply drops to the Island long after Dharma shut down (see season 6 supplementals)?

Another Unanswered question- how does duct tape withstand high pressure hydraulics long enough to get the Ajira plane in the air?

cg…Haven’t you heard yet? Duct tape, fixes EVERYTHING! from a broken toy, to a hole in the wall, from a dismembered limb to malfunctioning hydraulics it gets the job done!!!

(18) LostinMelancholy says:

In episode 16, season 5 ‘The Incident’, Jacob and MIB are sitting on the beach where a sailing ship is along the horizon.

“Morning,” (says Jacob)

“Mind if I join you?” (says MIB)

“Please. Want some fish?” (says Jacob)

“Thank you, I just ate.” (says MIB)

“I take it you’re here because of the ship.” (says Jacob)

“I am. How did they find the island?” (says MIB)

“You’ll have to ask them when they get here.” (says Jacob)

“I don’t have to ask. You brought them here. Still trying to prove me wrong, aren’t you?” (says MIB)

“You are wrong.” (says Jacob)

“Am I? They come, fight, they destroy, they corrupt. It always ends the same.” (says MIB)

“It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress.” (says Jacob)

“Do you have any idea how badly I want to kill you?” (says MIB)

“Yes.” (says Jacob)

“One of these days, sooner or later, I’m going to find a loophole, my friend.” (says MIB)

“Well when you do, I’ll be right here.” (says Jacob)

“Always nice talking to you, Jacob.”

The implications are that Jacob has the ability to bring people on to (and out of) the island—that he, as the protector of the island sets the rules that others interact with the island.

Once Jacob died, his rules no longer applied—and when Ben suggested to a bereaved Hurley that as the new protector of the island he can change these rules, Aijia 615 was able to leave the bounds of the island.
