The point of the flash-sideways was for the characters to reunite and move on together. So what was the point of the secondary flash-sideways storylines (i.e. Keamy kidnapping Jin, Jack finding Anthony Cooper, etc.)?
I think those secondary storylines were necessary to bring the characters where they needed to be mentally in order to meet at the church and move on together. Jack needed to learn to forgive his father. Claire needed to decide to keep her baby. Sayid needed to understand that Nadia was not the one for him. What do you think?

I agree. I think that the alternative storylines helped the characters discover things that they didn’t the first time around. Like Jack and Juliet: they may have thought in the first life that they were meant to be together but their divorce in the after-life confirmed that they were not.
Totally agree..we are enjoying watching Season Six! Definitely the FS was needed to direct the characters to move on from where they were….
Thanks Bonnie for continuing this site….a lot of good stuff on here from other fans…
Interesting question. The “cynic” in me says that the additional flash-sideways stories were meant to lead us to the conclusion that somehow the island reset (the nuke) worked and there was actually an alternate reality out there where our Losties had some good things happening for them .. where things were working out in their favor. Such good fortune, of course, was contrary to the misery that we saw in their island lives and in their lives before (flash backs) and after (flash forwards) the island (“after meaning after their first stay on the island). So, in large part, the flash-sideways were meant to give us alot of hope – weren’t they? But in the end, of course, what we were seeing was their post-death consciousness acting out on a grand scale. Yes, indeed, still very hopeful but not what many of us really thought was coming. So I don’t really think there was any “genius” thinking behind the secondary stories embodied within the flash-sideways nor do I think that there is some deeper meaning to them (as if Sayid, e.g., was working issues out vis-a-vis Nadia).
I agree with you Bonnie. The different, yet similar, paths they were on helped them understand, or work through, issues they had in their lives so they could move on. They were all connected in some fashion while alive, so the same happened in the sideways.
