Unanswered 'Lost' Question - Who was Behind the Outrigger Shooting?

By July 11, 2010

In episode 5x4, The Little Prince, Sawyer and his group rowed across the island when they were suddenly shot at. I thought for sure we'd later see who was behind the shooting and that it would be some sort of Lost twist. Many thought that we'd find out it was a different version of themselves since they were flashing through time. We never got the answer and many (myself included) are disappointed. So, let's make up our own answer. Who do you think was behind the shooting?

Given that they were in the timezone after Ajira 316 had crash landed on Hydra Island (2007), my guess is it was Ilana & co when they were on their way to the main island. If the outrigger had an Ajira bottle in it, surely it belonged to Ilana & co (or Caesar). They were probably shooting at them for stealing the outrigger.

I’d like to throw in a monkey wrench into this discussion–Ilana and her crew (with Frank Lapius and the cargo container with the body of John Locke latched aboard the outrigger) were heading from Hydra Island to the main island when they were on the opposing outrigger canoe.

Sawyer and his crew (John, Juliet, Daniel and Miles) were rounding the main island to shortcut to the Orchid Station.

When I was viewing the chase scene, I did not see a (huge) cargo container latched onto the pursing outrigger.

The presence of the Ajira water bottle certainly sets the timeframe of the chase–it could have been Charles Widmore’s crew (from the submarine) seeing John Locke (mistaking him for Man in Locke/MIB) that instigated the chase and shootout.

This is a very unresolved question. When Ilana and Bram come to the island they only have one boat. There are two boats on Hydra Island at that point because Lipidus has returned with one, but “Locke” and Ben have not come back with their boat.

We don’t actually see where this group comes ashore, but if it is at the old Oceanic survivor camp, where does the other boat come from? And exactly when does Ilana’s group go off in pursuit of the stolen boat? There is no time from when they land there to when they go to the statue. And that is where all but Ilana die.

There is still one boat left on Hydra people could bring over and land at the Oceanic camp, but who would do it? Where would they get guns, and why would they care so much if the other boat was taken?

The writers and producers may have missed continuity on this.
