Who's Side is Richard On?

Tuesday July 14, 2009
In the Lost forums, Shama brings up a good discussion point when she claims: Richard is not on Jacob's side at all.

She points out: The show's creators SO lead us down the garden path thinking that Locke was special when he wasn't. And because the Others follow Jacob, we have it in our heads that Richard is aligned with Jacob, too.

What if he is not? What if he is fooling the Others?

Read what Shama and others have to say and add your own thoughts: Richard is not on Jacob's side at all.

(1) Claude says:

Richard clearly lied to Widmore when he said that Jacob wanted the Others to help the wounded child Ben. But Richard seems clueless in many ways, rather than someone who’s helping to carry out a malevolent plot.

Richard was puzzled by Locke’s apparent “resurrection.” If he was Black Shirt’s helper, why didn’t he recognize him or know of his powers? Also Richard was hesitant to take the fake Locke to Jacob, saying, “You just got back, John. There’s no need to rush things.” Richard didn’t want Ben to go into the foot of the statue, and earlier it seemed that he didn’t even want Ben back on the island. (He disdainfully asked the fake Locke, “What’s he doing here?”)

I don’t think Richard’s privy to Black Shirt’s end game. I think he’s a pawn himself, who’s content not to ask too many questions in exchange for his eternal youth.
