Another Look at 'Whatever Happened, Happened'

Friday April 3, 2009
Whatever Happened, Happened brought us a little insight into what happened to Ben (we'll get much more next week), clarification from Sawyer and Juliet on where they stand in their relationship, and Jack turning his back on Kate. Plus, we learned where Aaron is (not a huge shocker, but good to know). The best part was Miles trying to explain time travel to Hurley and Hurley finally stumping Miles.

I've got my own clues and theories, but I wanted to share this one from Lost fan Ryan that I really like:
Obviously, during the purge, all the children were saved and afterwards most have gone through the "transformation" to an Other and their memories of being a child in the Dharma Initiative were erased. Then each were raised by select members of the Others as their own.

The prime example is Ethan, because why would he be involved with the group of people responsible for his parents' murders unless he had no memory of his real parents?

So what about Penny? If Charles is still on the island in 1977, then he wouldn't have had enough time to have her after leaving the island because that would make her 19 at most in 1996 when she's involved with Desmond. So according to my theory she was a child of the Dharma Initiative and after the purge she was "assigned" to Charles and was exiled off the island with him. Perhaps she could even be Ben's childhood friend.

So then it stands to reason that Sun could have been Chang's child and after the purge was "assigned" to Mr. Paik, who is then kicked off the island. That lends credit to the fact that she didn't flash back to 1977 during the Ajira crash because she already existed on the island in 1977.

That leads me to Daniel. He moved back to 1974 with Sawyer, Juliet, and Miles, so where is he in 1977? Well, what if he was a Dharma child "assigned" to Hawking after the purge but wasn't born yet in 1974? He could go back to 1974 because he didn't exist there as a child. But if he was born in 1976 or 1977, the island would have to get rid of the adult Daniel so that baby Daniel could be born, which leads to the mysterious disappearance of Daniel in 1977.

Have I lost any one yet?

Interesting, except one problem in my mind. There was nothing in the comments from the Hostiles that Hawking and Widmore are actually on the island at that time. If Alpert doesn’t answer to them, that would lead me to believe that they are nowhere near the island in 1977.

Richard doesn’t answer to them, because he is not one of them. He is an “other” other. He is obviously different from the rest, as he doesn’t seem to age. He’s not the official leader, but he is not a follower either.

This is a good theory but I think the part about Daniel is wrong. The reason being is that we see him in the first episode of the season where he is walking through the Orchid station as it’s being built. So how could adult Daneil exist in a time when his young self already exists?

Also, when Sawyer says “he’s no longer with us” that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s no there in adult form.

you said that it was no shocker that kate left aaron with his real grandmother. i was sitting there think “how perdictable” but then i thought “wait a minute, that’s not true ‘Lost’ style. They didn’t show his grandmother actually getting him. they just showed kate leaving him by himself, assuming that his grandmother would get him” but how crazy/amazing/surprising would it be if we found out someone else got to him before claire’s mother did?!?!? that would be the best twist!!!! and another little note, when kate lost aaron in the grocery store and then found him with that lady, the camera stayed on the ladys face for a looong time. so i think either shes someone we should remember from way back, or shes someone we’ll see later. oops one more thing i forgot, i have a theory on where rose and bernard are. we haven’t seen them since like the beginning of season five. remember when sawyer and charlotte and miles and juliet and all of them meet young widmore and another guy when they were in the jungle. and one of them said that they heard sawyer say to meet at the creek. i think young widmore and his friend got to the creek when rose and bernard were there and killed them. and i think they put their bodies in the cave! because remember from season 1 when jack and kate were in the cave and they saw two skeletons and called them the adam and eve of the island? how weird would that be if it were rose and bernard? like they were looking at rose and bernards bodies, while rose and bernard were there alive! omg that would be sooo like Lost to do that with our heads!!!

the woman who found aaron in the grocery store was supposed to look like claire, to spook kate out. that’s why they focused on her for so much

Great theory on the kids, Ryan- especially proves how there are no kids on the Island and the whole no one ever successfully giving birth on the Island but Amy did with Ethan but maybe it was only successful because flight 815 people were there- I don’t know! To Jellybean-I don’t think Kate leaving Aaron with Carol was so predictable because it was a big guess on either Cassidy or Carol- and yes, they only showed Kate leaving Aaron’s room but I think we can assume Carol was outside the room because Kate was leaving right at that moment not sleeping overnight and leaving in the morning.

(8) Tuna says:

People can exist twice on the island at the same time. We saw this during one of the flashbacks where the flashers (Sawyer, Juliet, Miles, Daniel, Locke and Charlotte) witnessed the birth of Aaron/the light of the hatch emerging. Sawyer, Juliet and Locke all existed at the same time. Any theory based on “two of the same people can’t exist on the island at the same time” fails due to this fact.

Good point, tuna!
I just wanted to say that maybe Ryan’s Dharma Children Theory may not be true because in “Dead Is Dead,” when Whidmore gets sent away on the sub, Penny isn’t with him and it was said in one of the scenes that Whidmore couldn’t come back because he had a child with someone off the Island!
