Egyptian Statue?

From Bonnie Covel, About.com GuideMarch 7, 2009

This last episode seemed to have a lot of Egyptian references in it, including an ankh and the four-toed statue.

This picture from GetLostPodcastMedia.com indicates that the statue is Anubis, but John Fischer points out that the statue could also be Horus or Seth. I like the idea of it being Horus (like Horace).

John also says:

It was interesting that Richard is referred to as the guy with the eye liner - ancient Egyptian rulers and higher ups wore eye makeup.

The Phoenicians adopted many of the Egyptian gods and tweaked them a bit to suit their purpose. Interestingly, Carthage, their capital, was in modern day Tunisia. Did the Phoenicians - famous for their sea-faring ability - discover the island?

The island seems to have many symbols of many world religions both past and present - Christianity, Egyptian and Hindu come to mind immediately. Clearly the wheel has something to do with the Hindu wheel of life. The Dharma wheel and the Hindu wheel both have 8 spokes.

We know that all names on Lost have significance. Could Richard Alpert be somehow connected to the Egyptian God Ra? Richard Alpert = R.A.

Yes, he very well could. Good thinking!

Richard Alpert is the name of the Harvard researcher who in the 1960′s went to India, became a disciple of a local guru called Need Karoli Baba, and came home to the US as Ram Das. His first book from around 1968 (my memory)was called Be Here Now. I think Richard is a time-slider, popping in and out to arrange things as he (or the island) wants them.

Dark UFO has a really great theory on it being Tawaret. Another Egyptian God:

Um, yeah… see the crown-thingy? And the ears pointing back? And the FOUR TOES?

And guess what this babe is the Egyptian goddess of? Fertility. She’s also the protector of pregnancy and childbirth.

BOO-YA!

So my vote is that the statue is Taweret, and (in addition to the stuff I wrote above) here’s why:
- In “D.O.C.,” Juliet told Sun that men were extra-fertile on the Island. (One might assume that women are, too.) Maybe the statue has “powers”?
- While we can’t be sure whether or not the statue is still in its original form once the crew landed in 1974, we did see Juliet deliver a healthy baby three years afterward. Perhaps the moment that the statue was destroyed and/or crumbled was when the pregnancy problems began?
- Like Anubis, Taweret also carries an ankh (so the “eternal life” angle remains covered), and in her other hand was usually a sa (a symbol for “protection”).
- My husband, who put up with me talking to myself, rewinding/pausing the show ten bazillion times and scribbling notes Wednesday night, said, “That statue is clearly a woman. Look at the hips on that thing!” Once I learned about Taweret, his comment made much more sense, as this deity is known to have a little junk in her trunk. Anubis, on the other hand, is a slender male.

Actually, the statue was destroyed a long time before 1974 unfortunately, otherwise Taweret would make sense. It was destroyed by Richard’s boat, in the Richard Alpert flashback episode 50 or 60 some odd years before Dharma ever found the Island. When just Jacob and His brother were there as adults. But has anyone traced an Egyptian God that turns itself into black smoke? That would be an interesting tie-in.

And for the Record is the crocodile God Sobek. Look up images on google “LOST statue” It most definitely has a crocodile’s mouth, but the crown is as high as his wikipedia picture.
