Is Charlie Hume, Charles Widmore?

Tuesday March 3, 2009
I heard this theory a few episodes back, but dismissed it. However, the more I hear it, the more I've been thinking about it. Could Penny and Desmond's baby grow up to be Charles Widmore?

What if Penny and/or Desmond get back to the island with little Charlie? What if they return in the past? The question, then, is why would their son go by Widmore rather than Hume? I thought I saw a wedding ring on Penny's finger, but perhaps she and Charlie didn't take Desmond's name (that part seems odd).

Also, how would Penny have even been born if she had to give birth to her son so that he could grow up and father her?

I do like the idea of baby Charlie being Charles Widmore, but my brain just can't make it work. What do you think?

Interesting theory, but time/space limitations would need to be suspended for it to work.

You raise an interesting point in that everyone assumed they named the child after Desmond’s island friend, but it could simply have been to name him after Penny’s father (tho unlikely) given his history with Desmond. They do call him “Charlie” and not Charles….

Just a note: in the enhanced version of “Jughead,” they tell us that Desmond and Penny named their son after Charlie Pace. I remember it vividly, since there was already a lot of speculation that Charlie, their son, was named after Charles Widmore.

Well, it seems interesting but of course hard to believe.

I was thinking about the significance of Helen Norwood. Her name anagrams to “On Donor Wheel.” Of course, it also anagrams to “Old Neon Whore,” so it could mean nothing…..

That’s hilarious!!!

Remember, Charlie died, in the Looking Glass, unblocking the signal, so Penny’s call could come thru and she heard him say that Des was okay. I think they child was named for that heroic sacrifice by Charlie

I’m just going to throw this out there. What if baby Charlie IS Charlie Pace? If we can theorize that baby Charlie could be Charles Widmore, it takes slightly less logic to say that he is Charlie Pace, right? Now follow me for a bit on this… Before Desmond and Penny catch a flight for LA to search for Faraday’s mother, they decide it would be best to not take Charlie with them. They have to leave him with someone they trust, but who? How about the doctor that delivered him that they have since be-friended? In that village, in Guam perhaps? So, after Desmond meets Hawkings and leaves the church, he and Penny decide to give it up and get back to their boat, but not before they have to catch a flight back to Guam to pick up baby Charlie. So, just maybe, Desmond and Penny are in the coach section of the Aijra Airways flight to Guam, unknowning bound for the island. After all, the island isn’t done with Desmond, right? So, when the flash of light occurs, Desmond flashes back to the island, leaving Penny to crash with the plane. After the crash, she recognizes Lapidus from the rescue of the Oceanic 6. Together they head to the big island to search for Desmond in one of the outriggers. It makes more sense that the woman with Frank is Penny than Sun, because Sun should have flashed back to the island. In the meantime, the doctor realizes that Desmond and Penny aren’t coming back for baby Charlie and thus starts him along the path that will eventually drop him in the past and one day as a passenger on Oceanic 815.

(8) Saba Khan says:

yeah, I was also thinking on this Charlie Pace theory but you have explained and presented it very well. it may not be what J.J. Abrams thought but still it is a possibility.
Also I was thinking about Walt he told about his dream to John Locke and I am sure that dream is soon coming true. From Desmond’s dream of Faraday we can understand now that when someone has such dreams that things is happening in real in some other time line.

(9) Will says:

Perhaps Widmore isn’t really Penny’s father, but he knew that he was her son, Instead of further complicating the already complex he established their relationship in a way that she could accept.

I think it is definitely a possibility.

(11) Linda says:

My feeling is the baby boy that Amy had is Charlie Pace. She is forced to leave before the purge happens, leaving Horace behind on the island, and taking Charlie with her.

As for the theory about Penny and Desmond’s child, Charlie, I find that theory of him being a younger Charles Widmore a bit far-fetched. Like someone else said, it would take a bit of time/space problems to the limit as far as being believeable.

(12) Dyn6 says:

I feel that Desmond and Penny’s baby Charlie IS Charlie Pace. Somehow all three of them return to the island in Dharma time…like 1977. I believe that they have him leave the island on the DI submarine (perhaps fearing his life in the purge) and he then goes to 1977 off the island time…where he grows up to be Flight 815 Charlie Pace. Hence the reason Desmond has such a connection with him and visualizes him dying all the time…and Charlie then is forced to sacrifice his in Through the Looking Glass, so that Desmond and Penny can reconnect…which in turn leads Penny to get pregnant with Charlie again…

(13) Madison says:

First off, that baby cannot be Charlie Pace becuase THAT Charlie has on older brother.
I was thinking about him being Charles Widmore but when we first saw him it was in a time were Widmore was currently in the normal world. Sooo, there couldnt be two charles widmores living in the normal world at once right?? unless the older charles widmore ISNT there because we havent seen him since he helped locke, so who knows…

(14) Michael Joseph says:

I think that Charles Widmore took Penny as a child (as Ben did with Alex) and raised her as his own. I feel this might be a trend for the others, they have been taking and raising children since season 1. I don’t know if he knew she would be his mother later but I am sure she is not his actual Daughter. There is no proof that she is his daughter, there is no talk of Penny’s mother either.

SO…. I believe that Baby Charlie Hume will be taken to the island and back in time, and be raised as Charles Widmore. ie Charles Widmore is named after Charlie Pace.

micheal, the pictures you have are of baby charlie, desmond and penny’s child, but I can’t place the man in the other photo. I recognize him but can’t remember. Thank you for clarifying

The other man is Charles Widmore from the episode where Ben Linus is brought from the temple to the others camp. In the picture he is talking to Ben Linus.

(18) Joe says:

Here’s why it makes a ton of sense that Charlie Pace is Charlie Hume based on the themes in lost. #1- It would explain why Desmond knew how to save Charlie time after time to get him to the looking glass. I think Desmond’s figures out that you CAN change things when you cycle through time travel. I believe Desmond knows exactly how to go back in time and change events that help the island and/or himself. I believed we’ll see he failed all those times and had to go back in time to save Charlie until finally getting him to the looking glass. #2-the constant theme of main characters sacrificing their children for the island. Ben did it in season 4, Faraday’s mother sacrificed her son, and now I believe we’ll see that Desmond sacrificed his son Charlie which turns out to be Charlie Pace. I also believe we’ll see that tie in to why children can’t be born on the island. I think it’s a way for the island to somehow stop people from going back in time and changing things.

(19) Jessica says:

After watching faraday die in 1977, I now agree with you that Charlie is Charles Widmore. Yes, he was named after Charlie Pace, but that is just the reason his name is Charles- has no bearing on who he turns out to be in the time loop. If Faraday’s time loop is that he got on the freighter to go to the island in 2004, but, after a variety of happenings, ends up in 1977 where he is killed, then the possiblity that Charlie is Charles Widmore is a definite possibility. We don’t know how Charles Widmore got to the island in the first place, we just know he was there in 1954 at age 17. If the whole scenario of Lost is one endless “mabius” time loop (no beginning and no end) then it is certainly possible, particularly if we find out that penny is not Charles’ biological daughter. It’s kind of like the original Terminator movie, didn’t Linda Hamilton get pregnant with john connor by having sex with grown up john connor? something like that.

seriously am i the only one who has noticed that des and penny are still in the present and don’t have any intention of going back to the island…really?!?

(21) Heidi says:

I do not believe that Charles Widmore is Penny’s son in the future. If this is true, why does he try so hard to keep Penny and Desmond apart? If he were successful, then he would not ever be born, thus throwing all of the future out of line.
