'Ji Yeon' - First Impressions

Thursday March 13, 2008
I love Lost, but this one has me really confused. At first I was convinced that Jin had faked his own death and was working for Mr. Paik without Sun knowing, but after reading the comments and thinking about it some more, I've concluded that while Sun's were flash forwards, Jin's were flashbacks. The conclusive evidence being that the store clerk said it was the Year of the Dragon, which means it can only be 2000, 2001, 2012, or 2013.

The first time my jaw dropped this evening was when Juliet told Jin that Sun had had an affair. I was almost as surprised when Jin brought dinner to Sun and forgave her for the affair.

And why did Regina jump? Had she gone crazy with flashes like Desmond, but without a constant? Now that Desmond knows "the secret" will he be able to help others?

For a split second, after seeing Michael (was anyone shocked about that) and then seeing Sun in labor, I thought the baby was going to be black, but according to Hurley she looks just like Jin, so Ji Yeon must be Jin's baby.

Wouldn't it have been cool if we hadn't known Michael was on the freighter? That would have been a nice jaw-dropper.

Why was no one at the hospital with Sun? Where was her mother? Has her father ordered them all to have nothing to do with her?

What do you think?

I’m thinking the flashes with Jin were flashBACKS, not flashforwards.

(2) Tony says:

I agree, thats totally the case

(3) Lostaway Bonnie says:

I don’t think so. It’s possible, but I don’t think they would mix flash forwards and flashbacks. I’m pretty sure it was all flash forwards.

(4) mom22 says:

I think it was a flashback. When Jin went back to buy the panda for the 2nd time the clerk tried to sell him a Dragon saying it was the year of the dragon. The year of the Dragon was in 2000 and will be again in 2012.
Did anyone else catch this? I think it was just a twist by the writers.

(5) Lostaway Bonnie says:

Oh, that’s right! Hmmm, I have to think about this a little more.

(6) Ashley says:

I’m pretty sure Jin’s flashes were flashbacks, not flash-forwards. He would never go back to working for Mr. Paik again. Especially if he and Sun were no longer together.

I think he actually dies, possibly next week. That would let his death date actually be 2004. (Remember, they’re in late December 2004, right after Christmas. Desmond called Penny on Christmas Eve.)

Another option would be for him to go back to Korea and Mr. Paik kills him because he tried to leave. That would also explain why Sun’s family wasn’t present at the hospital when she gave birth. She wouldn’t want to have anything to do with her father if he had killed Jin.

(7) mom22 says:

Did anyone catch the date on Jin’s tombstone. It was hard to read and understand but I thought it said 9/?/2004-is this right and how is that? Wasn’t that the date the plane crashed? I can’t remember it has been so long ago.

March 13, 2008 at 11:06 pm
(8) Lostaway Bonnie says:

Wasn’t it in Chinese? The date of the crash was 9/22/2004, so if Jin’s were flashbacks, they could have put that on his headstone, saying he died in the crash. But then does that mean he dies on the island?

March 13, 2008 at 11:08 pm
(9) MTO says:

ya i totally had a blank moment when jin said hes only been married 2 months.

but ya, i totally think that the writers blind sighted us by doing jin’s flash backs while sun’s were flash forwards. how could jin possibly work for sun’s dad while sun thinks he’s dead.

March 13, 2008 at 11:09 pm
(10) Lostaway Bonnie says:

I’m looking at the tombstone. Down one side it says 1980 3 20. On the other side, it says 1974 11 27, which must have been his birth date and then 2004 9 22 which was the date of the crash. But what happened on March 20, 1980 when Jin was six years old?

March 13, 2008 at 11:13 pm
(11) mom22 says:

I think he dies trying to get Sun off the island, be it on the island itself or on the ship. There are supposedly only 6 survivors so the rest die somehow or are left behind.

March 13, 2008 at 11:14 pm
(12) MTO says:

i’m pretty sure that asian people have joint tomb stones, i’ve seen them in cemetaries. the other two dates are probably jin’s parents. if you go to losteastereggs.blogspot.com, it shows 9-22-04, which i’m pretty sure is jin’s death date. so he is not one of the oceanic 6, its probably a memorial tombstone for his death, which the rest of the world thinks happened when the plane crashed

March 13, 2008 at 11:16 pm
(13) mom22 says:

I thought it was a joint plot between Jin and Sun and March 1980 is her birthday. The line next to March 1980 has no numbers so I think it shows her birthday and is left open for her death date.

March 13, 2008 at 11:17 pm
(14) tony says:

The date on the headstone is the same as the date they crash onto the island. Maybe that is a date chosen by the Oceanic 6 for the cover up story, only 2 others are said to have survived the crash and die later. I think Jin was flashbacked to when he was still working for Mr Paik and Sun forward as one of the 6. I would imagine she must get off the island in within 2 weeks(lost time, not ours) if Juliets warnings are correct. As for Jin maybe he dies at some stage or maybe he stays behind on the island for some reason, either way hes dead to the outside world as are anyone else who chooses to stay behind.
Very good though setting two different time stories to look like they were the same point in time, keeps up all the confusion!!

March 13, 2008 at 11:26 pm
(15) Lostaway Bonnie says:

Yes, Sun’s birth date on the left side of the tombstone. That makes total sense. I bet that is what it is.

March 14, 2008 at 12:10 am
(16) Dixie says:

Wow! Good theories. They must be flashbacks. But how confusing.

(17) John Fischer says:

I’m later than usual adding my comments since I am in Hawaii this week for work and saw the episode 6 hours later than at home.

A good episode, not great, but good.

No question that Jin’s were a flashback. It was definitely filmed to keep us believing it was happening the same time as Sun’s flash forward but the fact that he said he has only been married 2 months gave it away.

I tend to believe Jin is alive and well on the island and that this is all part of the ruse that the Oceanic 6 have to tell about the others. Having him die on the date of the plane crash is a big clue to the lie.

That, of course raises other questions. Who then is the other missing member of the Oceanic 6? Why did Sun leave without Jin? Why was Hurley the only one that came to Korea?

I used to think that Sawyer got beat up a lot. This year the crown goes to Juliet. She’s getting slapped around by everyone. She’s much too pretty to have to endure that!

So is Widmore is behind the freighter and I trust that he is, then who did plant the other plane with the bodies? Does Ben and his mainland organization have that much power?

I suspect Paik fits somewhere in here too but on whose side? Is he with Widmore or with Ben?

It must have been a trip seeing downtown Honolulu (Chinatown) made up with all the Korean signs. I know exactly where those scenes were filmed.

Where is Walt if his father is on the freighter. Did they get back to the mainland and then he signed on as the maintenance man?

I’ve definitely concluded that the best episodes are the ones that have Locke and Ben in them. When neither are in an episode the episode tends to drag a bit. The exception is Desmond centric episodes which may be the best of all – perhaps because of all the Lost characters he has the one true love that is lost.

(18) rom says:

remember john ben didnt mind being asked for 3.2 million so he must have a lot of power of the island

March 14, 2008 at 8:40 am
(19) tony says:

John, you dont think Aron is the 6th? He would have been the 6th survivor rescued but as hewasnt born at the time of the flight and therefore his name isnt on the manifest then it leaves it open to debate. I think it would be him though.

March 14, 2008 at 9:22 am
(20) MTO says:

eggtown preview said another member of oceanic 6 would be revealed, so it must be aaron.

while watching ji yeon, i noticed that jin’s cell phone was really old school, but didn’t think much of it. obviously, we learned that cell phones say alot (jacks krazr in through the looking glass) so i gotta pay more attention to stuff like that

(21) wb says:

This episode made me cry a lot, which Lost hasn’t done for awhile. So, good job!

I retain a sliver of hope that Jin is still alive on the island, and the tombstone is just a cover story. That was the cutest Asian baby! Maybe Turniphead and Ji Yeon can get together in the future for a playdate.

Ben obviously has huge resources to fake the plane and recovery of the bodies. On the order of the GLOMAR Explorer mission (Google that for more).

March 14, 2008 at 10:22 am
(22) TM says:

Don’t we have our Oceanic 6? Kate, Jack, Hugo, Sun, Sayid, and Ben.

In the episode in the future where Sayid if golfing, meets that woman and get’s shot. Ben is removing the bullets from Sayid.

Did anyone else catch that?

(23) gina says:

OK…the “Oceanic Six” means they have to have been on the plane to begin with! Aaron, not on the plane, Ben, not on the plane. So, some people who were not on the plane could make it off ( Julia, Desmond, etc..). We still have only 5. Maybe it’s Walt.

March 14, 2008 at 10:51 am
(24) TM says:

Good point, Gina.

Any guess on who is in the casket in Jack’s flash forward?

March 14, 2008 at 10:56 am
(25) Lostaway Bonnie says:

I think Aaron is included in the Oceanic Six even though he wasn’t on the manifest. He was rescued as part of the Oceanic rescue, so therefor, I think he’d be included.

I also think that the writers left it open like that so that we would believe Jin was one of the Oceanic Six so that they could give us the twist at the end. I think the Oceanic Six are Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun, and Aaron.

If Ben was with them when they got rescued (I don’t think he was), then I’m sure he wasn’t mentioned to the media.

(26) nichole says:

Jins tombstone said that he died in 2004. Last weekend when desmond looked at the date so he knew what day to tell penny he was going to call it was Christmas eve 2004 so Jin only has like a week to live if he was still alive christmas even adn dies in 2004. so i think he is going to die next week. :( those were definitely flashbacks for jin..tricky

(27) jasmine says:

What did Jin mean when he said I’ve been married for 2 months – that confused the hell out of me.

March 14, 2008 at 11:33 am
(28) nichole says:

i just went back and watched the end of the episode and there were three dates on the tombstone: 3/20/1980, 11/27/1974, 9/22/2004. i am not sure what the three dates were about but all this means is that the time laps between real time and island time is like three months. remember the island time is different from the outside world

(29) Mikidee says:

My boyfriend and I love lost and theorize a lot. Here is what we think may be going on (with reference to some other comments made)

I do not think Jin is dead, my boyfriend thinks he may die on the island. Either way, the tombstone clearly read “9.22.04″ which means the world considered Jin dead on the day of the crash. (Someone referenced it already but please do visit losteastereggs.blogspot.com for an upclose screenshot) Also, we know that his segments are “flashbacks” because he states “I’ve only been married 2 months”. Also the oldschool cellphone caught my eye too (although I thought it was a Korean thing. Man ignorance can get the best of ya) Good catch on the “year of the dragon” comment… I didn’t even think of that!

These clues lead us to believe Jin is not one of the Oceanic Six.

So who are the Oceanic Six? We know Hurley, Jack, Kate, Sun, Sayid for sure. My boyfriend and I have 2 theories about who can be the 6th but lean toward theory 2.

Theory 1: Ben is the 6th. He becomes the 6th by taking someone’s identity from the manifest. He was very convincing as the balloon pilot when we first met him, who’s to say he didn’t choose someone that had no living connections (with that big of a plane, a loner was sure to be found). However, I think Ben would have no need to do such a thing (he has passports and is obviously trying to dodge Widmore’s people directly) and so Theory 2 appears to be stronger.

Theory 2: The 6th person is Michael. Something happens to the boat, but michael escapes with the other Losties. He is also the one in the coffin which is why Jack is upset. Michael betrayed Jack on the island, but also reminds Jack of the island and so his death is one of confusion, frustration, and sadness. Michael was also the only one on the boat and perhaps was Jack’s hope of being able to navigate back to the island. In his flashbacks, michael seemed to be a loner, so it would make sense that he would have no one show up to the funeral.

(30) Meghan says:

Gina- I was listening to the official Lost podcast, where Damon and Carlton were saying that the Oceanic 6 were not necessarily all on the plane. They made up a story for the media anyways, as we know from Kate’s trial, so who’s to say they aren’t pretending someone was on the plane that wasn’t?
