Black Smoke Off the Island?

Thursday February 7, 2008
Is Matthew Abbadon real? He seemed to know a lot when he visited Hurley at the mental hospital. And did you notice black smoke when he left? No? Take a lot for yourself (in slow motion).

What do you think?

I Definitely think that Matthew Abbadon is Real, and not in Hurley’s Mind as I read in the comments of others on the web, for one the if i recall one of the nurses or workers of the hospital said that hurley had a visitor so she saw him. I only saw the episode when it aired and didnt see or rememeber seeing smaoke when he left so I doubt it is anything.

Im also thinking we will see him soon in another one of the oceanic 6 survivors flash fowards real soon maybe even tonight!

I didn’t notice the smoke, either, the first few times I watched it, but I did notice there was something strange about the way he left. Of course, if he was the smoke monster, it seems he would have known about the others on the island and would not have to ask about them.

As far as someone else being able to see him, someone else was able to see Charlie too.

Hopefully we’ll get more clues tonight (I’m sure we will)!

Doesn’t “Abbadon” mean something like the devil? I’ll have to look that up, but that word or name sounds familar to me.

(4) John Fischer says:

This works with what I said previously. The Black Monster is Jacob and can make himself look like anyone who is dead either on the island or off. He has been Jack’s dad, a horse, Eko’s brother, Charlie (last week) and probably others I can’t remember.

(5) John Fischer says:

In Revelation 9:11, it is personified as Abaddon, “Angel of the Abyss”, rendered in Greek as Apollyon; and he is described as king of the locusts which rose at the sounding of the fifth trumpet. In like manner, in Rev. vi. 8, Hades is personified following after death to conquer the fourth part of the earth.

Many Biblical scholars believe Abaddon to be Satan or the antichrist. Others have stated that he may be one of the lesser demons of hell, or even a dark angel.

Yep, that’s what I was thinking of. So, I take that to mean this guy is evil and if he is in fact, the Smoke Monster, it must be evil too and not just a security system.

(7) Dixie says:

It didn’t really look like the smoke monster to me, just a shadow. Am I missing something?

(8) Lostaway Bonnie says:

No, you’re not missing anything. It may have just been a shadow, but didn’t you find his exit odd. They didn’t show him walking out, just his shadow or smoke or whatever it was.

Well, it fits with my long-time theory. Not to get too into, but I’ve always believed it’s ALL about Hurley-and the numbers. He’s the only one who never really harmed anyone. I’ve checked boards numerous times and I’ve never seen anyone else mention it, but ol’ Smokey makes a major appearance off the island in Hurley’s first back story (Numbers). Check out directly above the house he bought his mother as it’s burning. Still my favorite episode.

(10) Mark says:

Not to get too off topic, but I know there are other survivors (Rose & Bernard) who never harmed anyone. But, it is all about the numbers somehow, and the fact that everyone’s connect which I think stems from one person, being Hurley.

(11) Mark says:

And to tie it back to my original point, and back on topic, Smokey appearing however subtly in Hurley’s past and future, show that ‘he’ can go off the island. (Sorry-maybe I belong in a rest facility).

Just to get this back on topic (and back to my point), I think Somkey can definitely appear off the island as ‘he’ has in both Hurley’s past and future. (Sorry-maybe I belong in a rest facility).

(13) Tom Tennant says:

I don’t think Abbaddon is the smoke monster. I’m sticking with the smoke monster as henchmen (or side kick, depending on whether you think the smoke monster is good, evil or somewhere in between). The scene was set up to make it look as though Abbaddon realistically “disappeared” — it’s a standard visual cliche: your character turns and the door closes, suggesting both a hasty and guilty retreat. I’m actually of the mind that Abbaddon is one more step closer to whatever is either 1) battling Jacob or 2) working for Jacob.

Actually, I’m still convinced Jacob is Jack (because of the irony of Jack having to ask Locke for help).

Watch the slow-motion clip. It was meant to be subtle which is why most people did not notice it. It definitely is not just a shadow. You can clearly see in the slow motion clip that there is black smoke (CGI generated) that gets sucked out of the door. It isn’t a coincidence. I didn’t know his last name was “abaddon” or that should have been a huge clue to everyone. They didn’t name it as such.

But what everyone here is assuming is that there is only one “smoke monster”. Who is to say that? How do we know there isn’t more than one monster/angel/whatever? I think Richard Alpert on the island is another one.

The video is gone from the link. Anyone know where else I could find that?

I’m so glad I didn’t imagine the smoke! I made my husband watch it twice but he doesn’t think it was there. At least someone else thinks it was there.

What an amazing show.
