Same or Different Cat?

Monday March 19, 2007
In Sayid's episode, Enter 77, we saw a cat in the flashbacks and a cat on the island. The questions is this: Were they the same cat?
Lost fan Debbie wrote in with this:
Two girls at work and I love Lost. Well, we always talk about it on Thursday mornings. We got in a disagreement this past week. They both say it was the same cat in Sayid’s flashback and on the island. I say they are two different cats. They were trying to figure out how the same cat got on the island.

I have four cats myself and they are all different. I said, “The cat that was in the wife’s lap was a Persian and had dark on its back, whereas the cat on the island was a yellow and white one." Please tell me I am not crazy. This disagreement started last Thursday and is still going on. Now, we have two other people listening to this and jumping in on the conversation (they don’t even watch the show). Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Lostpedia has posted a picture of both cats: http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Cat. And Debbie, you'll be happy to know that our cat expert, Franny Syufy, says:
When I saw the brief glimpses of the cats on the episode in question, I had a feeling it was the same cat. However, after viewing both images on lostpedia.com, it seems fairly obvious that two different cats were used in this episode.

First, Amira's cat has a dark nose, while Mikhail's cat, Nadia, has a distinctive white muzzle, including a streak up and into the lower forehead.

Second, the distinctive tabby cat "M" markings are different. Nadia has a straight dark vertical stripe on the right (left side looking at the picture), while Amira's cat has a more curved stripe in that location with an intersecting shorter stripe.

While they both have distinctive Maine Coon coats (I'd suspect they are mixed breeds), I'm sure they are two different cats.

Oh good. I’m glad to get this cleared up. I was wondering the same thing.
