Is Overhype Guy Ruining Lost?
Lost has been getting a bad rap lately. The ratings have dropped, though it just means that Lost dropped from #1, but is still somewhere in the top 20. The critics have been rather loud lately in their complaints about the show, and while the last episode Stranger in a Strange Land, had more viewers, there were also more complaints, even among those who have not previously complained about the show (Stranger in a Strange Land Discussion).
For those of you who did not like this episode, stop and think, was it because the episode was not good, or was it because of Overhype Guy?
I am a person who does read spoilers and loves behind the scenes type of stuff on upcoming episodes, but even so, I feel like Overhype Guy is ruining it for me. He's not giving me spoilers, he's giving me false promises. And even when the show follows through with Overhype Guy's promises I don't like it. I'd rather see for myself on the show rather than hear it from him.
So what do you think? Would this episode have been better if Overhype Guy was stranded on a deserted island unable to spew his Lost promises?

I didn’t see the promos, so I didn’t hear the Overyhype guy. But I didn’t like the episode. They keep getting vaguer and vaguer. Each episode answers one of the hundreds of questions that already exist, and add more question to it. At this rate, we will never find anything. The backstories should have more answers in them. My husband keeps making fun of the show and asks why I watch it. I’ve been hooked thus far and want to watch it to find answers, but I’m about ready to throw in the towel as well. I hope the producers read these discussion and start having more substance in these episodes.
I agree OG got expectations up too high. I was watching for the answers to three questions and I don’t think I found them. Last week’s Desmond episode was very good, but I did like this episode too. I am patient. I know they will tell us answers eventually. I like thinking and wondering. That is what makes this show so interesting to me. If they told it all at once, I think I would be disapointed because I’d have nothing left to wonder about. As long as they have a stop date in mind and tie up all the loose ends by that time, I will be happy. In the meantime, I think I won’t watch the previews anymore.
Interesting question. For me it’s not the overhype so much as the whole emphasis this season on The Others, Jack, Kate and Sawyer. As interesting as the story has been and it has been interesting, they’ve basically ignored all of the rest of the cast which we all came to enjoy for two years.
I can’t imagine being one of the actors who play Hurley, Locke, Sayid, etc. What have they had each, maybe 10 minutes tops of air time all season!
That combined with total mishandling of the show by ABC has caused the problems.
I may not have liked this week’s episode that much but it was still better than 90% of the drivel we get on TV, but, as you know, with my Hawaii connections, I’m a Lost fanatic. I’ll watch till the bitter end. I just hate the way ABC has taken a top 5 series and screwed with it much too much.
I’m getting the idea that this is a HUGE story, with each season developing a new layer of it. As each layer is added, it is going to have to dilute the component parts, at least in terms of time spent.
I’m totally intrigued by what is developing, but it’s going to be very difficult to pull off logistically – keeping everyone’s interest as this big story develops. It may not work. But just think what will happen when they add the “other Others”! Could be great, could be a total disaster. (I am convinced that the eye that will open in the fall will be someone totally new, though.)
So much of life is managing expectations. Lost is no different. If you allow the OG types to manage your expectations, then, yes, you will be bitterly disappointed. If, on the other hand, you take lost for what it is (an incredible journey into a world of mystery that has us all begging for more) and pepper it with a little dose of reality (the human-ness of the writers diluted by the constraints of a large profit making machine and their spin propaganda) then you are not so easily taken in by the OGers.
Lost is a journey, not a destination. The OGers promised destination last episode. This is unrealistic and we should know better than to fall for it. We cannot expect to get true destination until the final episode and even then most will not be truely satisfied.
Recognize the OGers for what they are, take them with a grain of salt, and just sit back and enjoy the journey.
Exactly! I agree 100%. Well said, bcre8ve.
