Killing Off Main Characters

Wednesday June 28, 2006
The buzz this week is that J.K. Rowling might kill off Harry Potter in the final book of the Harry Potter series. I can't imagine her doing that, but you never know. It would mean that no one could come along later and write a sequel about Harry.

In the original Lost pilot script, Jack died (it was him up in the tree, not the pilot). Then Kate became the reluctant leader. The focus groups didn't like that the hero died, and so the script was changed.

In their book Unlocking the Meaning of Lost: An Unauthorized Guide, Lynnette Porter and David Lavery explore the theme of rebirth in Lost. Each character symbolically dies in the crash and is reborn on the island. They give two examples of Charlie, and one of Kate, Sawyer, Rose, Michael, and Boone.
