Q: Why was September 22, 2004 such a big day?
A1: It was the day Flight 815 crashed on the island
A2: It was the day Desmond did not enter the code in time and the timer reached zero
A3: It was the day millions of Americans and Canadians sat in front of their televisions to watch a new show called Lost.
Satisfaction level: 10 (out of 10)
Q: Why did Flight 815 crash?
A: Desmond did not type in the code which caused a magnetic force that had something to do with the plane crash.
Satisfaction level: 7
Q: What happens when the countdown ends?
A: Everything goes nuts. Things start flying around the hatch, attracted to the magnet behind the walls. A loud noise is heard all over the island and a bright light is seen, although this could have been caused by Desmond turning the key to the security system.
Satisfaction level: 6
Q: Why does Jack yell at Michael to "Tell them the truth!"?
A: Instead of following Sayid's plan, Jack flipped out and made Michael tell Hurley, Sawyer, and Kate that he hadn't told them the truth.
Satisfaction level: 7
Q: What has been happening to Walt this whole time?
A: ?
Satisfaction level: 0 But to be fair the producers said the Walt story would be resolved, not that we would find out what had happened to him.
Q: What is Mr. Friendly's real name?
A: Tom
Satisfaction level: 10
Overall satisfaction: 8
I thought last season's finale was better.
Do you find it odd that Libby's (Elizabeth) husband's name was David? As in Dave? As in Hurley's imaginary friend?
What did you think of the finale and what are your theories?

I’ll post more later when I’m fully awake, but I was very disappointed in the “why the plane crashed” explanation. If indeed it crashed because of the magnetic anomoly when Desmond failed to enter the numbers, it pretty much makes all of the flashbacks we’ve seen meaningless. For two years we’ve been led to believe that certain passengers on the plane were brought there for a reason. Now we’re told they got there solely by accident when Desmond failed to enter the numbers? That makes no sense. Plus, the anomoly lasted a few seconds, minutes at most. The plane flew off course for 3 hours if I recall correctly. There has to be more there than what they’re telling us or else this is a really lame explanation.
I think you’re right with David=Dave. Maybe Libby’s dead husband’s spirit was with her in the mental hospital where she and Hurley were and Hurley was communicating with the spirit.
I was a Classics Major in college (Latin, Greek & Ancient History). Homer’s Odyssey is the story of Odysseus who sailed lost around the Mediterranean for years following the Trojan War. His wife Penelope waited faithfullt for him to return from his sailing despite the fact that she had (get this) 108 suitors. Here Pen (Penelope) appears to be faithfully searching for Desmond for years.
What was with the HUGE 4 toed statue? Apparently another tip of the hat to Greek mythology/history. It reminded me of the Colossus at Rhodes (one of the 7 wonders of the Ancient World). Seems like there may have once been an ancient civilization on this island. Could it be Atlantis?
OK, Fake Henry apparently is the leader of the Others. If they know the way off the island (sail at a heading of 325 degrees from the pier) then why are they still there? Why did he just give away their only boat? Is someone going to bring the boat back?
Is this the end of the Michael and Walt story? We never did get any answers about why the wanted Walt. Michael seems to be leaving the island unredeemed which is a bad resolution to his story. Fake Henry told him he won’t be able to find his way back. Does the island move? Is there a force field around it? If this is the end of the Michael/Walt story, I hated how it ended.
What’s with Claire? A few days or weeks before in their timeline, she hated Charlie. He was a lying, thieving drug addict. Last week she suddenly holds his hand. This week she kisses him. Why?
More later.
What is the deal with the Russians in the snow noticing, apparently, the geomagnetic annomaly and calling Penelope? How would she know that when that happens Desmond is where it happens? Did she know her dad caused him to get there? If that is the case, how would he have done so?
Sayid notices that the “camp” of the Others was fake. Makes me believe the Others are Dharma scientists for sure.
What are they going to do with Jack, Sawyer and Kate?
Why bring Hurley all the way there just to send him back?
Where did the whispers come from when the Others were capturing the gang? Where they saying “Elizabeth”, which is the name of the boat and Libby’s real name?
Any significance I am missing in the name “Tom”??
I think it was a tremendous finale, and it has me totally juiced for season three. Some questions answered (partly) but many more new questions brought up (four-toed statue, the Belgians calling Penelope, Henry Gale’s claim to be “the good guys,” etc.) Excellent!
IT WAS AWESOME!
Oops, I sent before I meant to. It was great! I’m pretty much speechless about it!! Not that last year’s was bad, but I think this one was WAY better!
Look at the map that Kelvin drew on the door. One of the hatches is crossed out. It’s on the north shore of the island. Could this be the fake hatch we saw last night?
Why if the Others wanted Kate, Jack and Sawyer didn’t they take them when they had them before with Locke and send Locke back? Why make them go back and then have someone go to fetch them again?
It seems like there is more to the story of why the plane crashed. I keep thinking that maybe Desmond not typing in the numbers was not the entire story, yet the producers told us we would find out why the plane crashed. Is it the whole story?
The Greek mythology has me completely stumped! Penelope, Persephone, oh my!
I’m not completely sure that non-Henry is the leader of the Others. I think he is very high up in the ranks and may be the lead, but I don’t think he’s calling the shots. Although, I did hold out for a long time saying he wasn’t an Other, so there is a strong possibility that I’m wrong.
I don’t think Michael and Walt and gone for good. They may not be back next season, but they’ll be back.
I think Claire is feeling overwhelmed with everything and she’s used to leaning on Charlie. He’s showed her that he’s trying.
The Russians, the was awesome!
“Any significance to the name Tom?” The only thing that I can think of is that Claire’s ex-boyfriend, Aaron’s father, went by Thomas, but it’s not the same person.
Okay, I see that some of you really liked this finale. I’ve added a poll to the top of this blog post to get an idea of how many liked this season finale better than last season’s.
Why is Kate wet in the beginning? I noticed her hair looked wet at the funeral and it looks wet in the beginning of the finale.
Also, regarding Dave/David, Desmond’s middle name is David.
What I really liked about this episode was that the button really did matter. Things went horribly wrong when the button wasn’t pushed. I was disappointed when we found out the button was just an experiment, so to find out that it does matter makes me very happy!
Do you think that, based on the purpose of the button and the notebooks from the Pearl going into a big worthless pile in the middle of the jungle means that “our hatch” isn’t the expiriment, but the Pearl is?
I think the Pearl is in place as a cover. So that if The Swan hatch is discovered, or if the inhabitants wonder what they are doing there, Dharma can explain The Swan as a human experiment, even though that’s not what it is.
Libby sure looked different with the red hair. I’m assuming that was Libby. Libby, short for Elizabeth?
Dang! Sawyer found out that “caught in a net” means that Kate and Jack actually got caught in a net. Too funny!
I’m watching the episode again right now, and that giant bird definitely says, “Hurley.” It’s really spooky. It could just be it’s regular bird call, but it is saying Hurley. Freaky!
Wow, that kept me awake (quite the deal after 9 pm!)
I’m loving how the book “Bad Twin” ties into the series. I listened to it last week. The Widmore family are the protagonists.
OK, I’m gonna be very bummed if we lost Locke and Eko for sure. Especially since we still haven’t learned what paralyzed Locke (although that could show up in somebody else’s flashback).
Hmm, maybe Locke and Libby’s husband were on the balcony that gave way when Hurley stepped onto it…. Would explain why both Hurley and Libby were distraught in the mental hospital at the same time. Just tossing Locke in for good measure.
Yes, I did love that pushing the button really meant something! Eko wins, er….
Claire and Charley: John, that’s just women for ya… we’re like that, we take those bad boys back all the time.
The Others keep biting the dust. Once again an Other gets killed – for the crime of following too close? Our Lostaways really are the Bad Guys – shoot first, ask questions…never.
I’d be happy never to see or hear from Walt and Michael ever again. I’m sorry, but “I want my boy back” is not great teevee for me. To get his boy back (who was perfectly safe and being treated well) he killed two mostly-innocent people who trusted him. Michael is going to hell.
Y’know, I really don’t care what happens to Sawyer, Kate, and Jack. I like the hot crew of the Elizabeth better – Jin, Sun, and Sayid. Mama mia! Great to see a shirtless Sayid again. OK, I’m going to hell, too.
I haven’t finished Bad Twin yet, but I’m really enjoying it, despite the bad reviews.
I wouldn’t worry too much about Eko and Locke, I think they are fine.
Locke on the balcony when Hurley stepped onto it. I like that theory!!! Could be what caused him to become paralyzed. Libby’s husband was sick, though, and it didn’t sound like his death was sudden.
I know, another Other is now dead. Our group needs to check their trigger fingers for sure!
I read this comment in another forum. I love it:
The whole Dharma hatch thing makes zero sense. Why, if it was so critical to push that button — and it seems it may have been — why do you rely on one or two people to do it and then give them a key that supposedly blows the station up? Why not just have a timer that does the work of bleeding the charge off? or better yet, just blow the damn station up and be rid of it?
Also, why have another hatch watching the button hatch, and then tell the people doing the watching that the task the button pushers are doing is pointless? Bear in mind, the reports the watchers are doing apparenently just get dumped into a field so it does seem nobody really cared.
I think The Pearl was a cover. I’m not sure why they have people pushing the button instead of having it automatically happen.
On another note, when Penny finds Desmond in the stadium he is surprised that she was able to track him down. She says “With enough money and determination you can find anyone.” Perhaps she found Desmond and knew he was on the island, but had no way of getting to him until the electromagnetic field went down, so she paid people to keep an eye on it and now that it’s down, she can get to Desmond.
They really made it a point to make sure that we noticed that the statue only had four toes. I hadn’t noticed that until Sayid mentioned it. It must have some signficance (beyond being one of the numbers).
Yea, Bonnie, I think the statue will be topic of a lot of conversation over the summer. Is it Greek. If so, is this the lost continent of Atlantis that Plato wrote about. It was thought to have a secret powerful source of energy.
Some folks have mentioned a book called Headlong Hall by Thomas Love Peacock. Apparently it talks about a 4 toed remnant of a statue and also has references to the philosophers Locke, Rousseau and Hume.
I was wrong, Hurley didn’t go insane on Michael when he found out. I was disappointed by that.
I haven’t seen it mentioned, but this is maybe because it’s “mundane” as such connections go, but “Kelvin” was the soldier in Sayid’s season 2 flashback, who solicited him to get the information from another Iraqi during Desert Storm and, essentially, taught him the fine art of torture.
I’m fine with the explanation of how the plane crashed … (I’m less fine with the idea that those computers could survive such an intense magnetic field, but that’s the Physics Guide in me speaking.) I think it’s clear this isn’t the ONLY reason the plane crashed. For example, why did THAT PLANE happen to be over the island when the button wasn’t pushed? As Desmond said, it was all happening for a reason.
I do think that Desmond, Locke, and Ecko are all alive. Desmond is iffy, but I’m guessing he somehow made it.
As for Michael and Walt, I would guess that the device which gives the ship its bearings is magnetic. Not-Henry gave them the bearing which, in the existing magnetic field, would have taken them to rescue. Except the magnetic field on the island has changed, because the powerful field from the Swan hatch is no longer active. If so, that bearing will no longer take them to rescue, but will probably end up bringing them back to the island.
Is there a still shot of that weird bird that said Hurley’s name?!?! I couldn’t get a good look at it.
BTW, did anyone see the Hugh McIntyre thing on Jimmy Kimmel? I missed it.
Headlong Hall sounds like it would probably be a good book to check out. Might give us some answers.
Hurley didn’t go insane on Michael yet, he still may. I don’t think Michael will be back next season, but he will be back eventually, and then maybe Hurley will give him what’s coming to him.
I wondered if Kelvin and the army guy were the same person or if perhaps they were twins. The other guys name was Joe. So either he changed his name or he has a twin. I’m still looking for the twin connection somewhere. I’m convinced that somebody has a twin. (maybe Jack? More on that later…)Although with what Kelvin said later about being in the army or whatever he said makes me think Kelvin and Joe Inman are the same person. But why change your first name and not your last?
I’m looking for a shot of the bird. I’ll post it when I find it.
Didn’t watch Jimmy Kimmel. I’ve tivoed it, though.
Oh, yeah, one last thing, about the hostages Michael brought. I believe this is part of the overall “psychological test” theme.
Will Michael actually exchange 4 innocent people for his son? How far will he go?
Will Hurley, who is arguably one of the most unwaveringly moral of the Losties, abandon his friends when given the chance to? (Alternately, their psychological profile may have already determined that Hurley is the safest one in this role.) How will the guilt from this affect him?
Without Jack, the Losties have no leader. Sayid, Locke, and others will begin pulling the group in various directions, perhaps resulting in someone unexpected stepping up to the plate.
Kate & Sawyer are the two “worst” people prior to the crash, as both have committed pre-meditated murder in a non-military situation. Seeing what they’ll do in captivity will be fun.
Or maybe the Others just wanted to watch the Jack-Kate-Sawyer love triangle up close.
“Or maybe the Others just wanted to watch the Jack-Kate-Sawyer love triangle up close.”
LOL! That theory gets my vote. I think it’s the answer to all the questions.
Is it too far of a stretch to think that maybe the “mystical” part of the island and the “others” are not related.
Quote of the show:
Eko runs to Charlie and asks if he knows how they got the hatch door off. Charlie, playing the guitar, “No, but if you hum it I can probably play it.”
I think the Others are there BECAUSE of the mystical parts of the island.
http://www.thomaslovepeacock.net/Headlong.html
Found this during a web search. Interesting.
(not)Henry Gale obviously lied when he said he didn’t push the button. Why? If he wanted Locke to not push the button, then why not just not do it himself?
I’m still stuck on the whole 4 toe statue thing. Maybe its Atlantis, maybe it’s not, but is it possible “The Others” are trying to create their own version?
Also — I was thinking about the plane crash. Maybe when Desmond didn’t get the numbers typed in before it counted down, and pulse was enough to start pulling items in, it grabbed the tail end of the plane, which did come off first. Of course, once this happened, the plane had to crash. I agree with John that is was dissatisfying since we were lead to believe they were meant to be on that island.
Anyone think it was odd that Fake Henry, who is probably the leader of the “others” came himself to take Locke rather than one of his cronies?
Oh, one more thing….
Anyone have thoughts on what the Seurity System may be all about now?
The question of why they didn’t take Locke, when Fake Henry said that he came for him, has come up repeatedly. The answer is simple and I really hate to break it to you … but…
Fake Henry lies!
There’s no reason to believe he was telling Locke the truth. It’s far more believable that he was trying to play off Locke’s emotions and faith to get released (or a chance to escape) from the hatch. Keep in mind, he didn’t know that Michael was coming for him.
Fake Henry could have escaped when the blast doors came down. Also, what about when Sawyer theorized about them being aliens?? Four toed statue???
Just after the Michael party finds the tubes and before they get shot with the darts, there is whispering in the jungle. I made out “Elizabeth” for sure, and it sounded like other names, like maybe “Linda” or “Melinda” and something that started with an H. Can anyone else make out what the whispers are?
The bird 100% definitely says “Hurley.” I wouldn’t have caught that except that we watch Lost with closed captioning turned on — it helps many times! Unfortunately, it did not help with the whispers… The cc just said “[whispering voices]” or something similar to that.
The Russian guy at the end, Horace, Jack’s twin? People are saying that it’s Matthew Fox and I just rewatched it and I think they are right.
Maybe non Henry went to get Locke himself because if things went wrong, he would be able to manipulate, where as someone else would have folded.
Kinda weird, Bonnie. I rewatched it earlier and paused my DVD and thought he looked nothing like Jack. He was too young. Anyway the credits list the actors who played the two men
Yeah, I checked the credits too and noticed they were played by two people, but when they show the close up of him on the phone with Penny, it’s the eyes. It’s him, I’m sure of it.
Just as a side note. In our family my wife and I watch the show and two of her sisters do also. After last night one has decided to stop watching LOST (even last night she switched back and forth with American Idol) the other says she’s probably done with LOST. Both have the same reasons – two many new questions and too few answers makes the show much too confusing for many viewers.
Like it or not, the majority of people want to be entertained by TV and they enjoy some mysteries. What they don’t want is a TV show to become a Mensa Test.
For example, I like CSI. I really like CSI Miami because many weeks they stick to one story. I can deal with two stories in one episode. When those shows deal with three story lines in an hour they lose me. At 9:00 p.m. I’m winding down for the day, ready to head to bed soon. I want to relax with a glass of wine and enjoy what I’m watching.
I’ll still watch LOST but I can honestly say that I don’t know if I would if it didn’t have the Hawaii connections. I really like some of the characters and the actors who play them, but when you go weeks between scenes featuring your favorites then it also kinda makes you feel that you’ve poorly invested your time.
Kate is my favorite character and she’ll always get screen time, but some of my other favorites – Claire, Sun, Jin and Sayid were really abandoned most of this season.
Aargh. I made a mistake earlier — the men at the end are speaking Portugese, *not* Belgian. Just went back and checked the closed captioning again. Heck, now I’ve learned there is no Belgian. People in Belgium speak German, Dutch or French… Sorry about that!
Ok, did I miss this: what about the “black light map”. Thats the first time that ever happened, and we saw when the button wasnt pushed, the map didnt show again, sooo…what triggered the blacklights from the first time?
John Fischer wrote: “…too many new questions and too few answers…”
I think that’s one of the things that wound up killing Alias. I loved it from start to finish, but it just became too complex for people to stick with it.

I wrote: “I made a mistake earlier…”
Actually, I *thought* I made a mistake earlier. But apparently I never actually posted the “Belgian” error… In any event, the two men at the end are definitely speaking Portugese according to the closed captioning.
Yeah, I didn’t recognize the language, and I would have known if they were speaking Flemish Dutch, I’ve been on trips to the Flemish-speaking area of Belgium a couple of times.
I think Lost is just about right for me with mysteries and storylines. We HAVE come a long way this season. Season 1 was all unseen monsters in the jungle and MAYBE there were “Others.”
Season 2 we have found out quite a lot, but still plenty of things to wonder about. There definitely ARE others, and have been Dharma Initiative scientists, there is definitely some sort of experimentation going on, etc.
But all along I’ve liked the backstories more than the Island plots. They do the backstories very well.
Wendy,
The backstories are my favorite parts also. They get me searching for all of those LOST locations on Oahu. There were plenty of new ones in the final episode.
Nice article with some good clues from the producers of LOST in a NY Times article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/25/arts/television/25lost.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
Okay, I’ve watched the entire episode again and I do really like it! The one part I wasn’t satisfied with was the pier scene with the Others. It seemed to drag. But other than that I loved the episode.
My favorite part was the Desmond/Locke flashback when Locke was banging on the hatch door shortly after Boone died. It was so neat to see it from Desmond’s perspective. And I really liked learning more about Desmond and getting his back story.
The whole introduction of Widmore was excellent!
Did anyone else notice how often the number 3 kept popping up? It was all through the episode, 33 on the timer, 3 years that Desmond had been on the island, the coordinates for Michael was 325, Locke got into the hatch 3 days have Desmond first heard him, just to name a few. The number three was very prominent. Could this be a clue?
Speaking of clues, John called in when he talked about the Pala Ferry after the ? episode. I noticed the second time I watched it that there was a sign at the dock that said Pala Ferry.
At the end, when Jack nods and Kate blinks, I think it’s because they have a plan. I think Sawyer is in on it too. I think the beginning of next season we will see them carry out their plan.
I wondered about the black light, too. What did trigger it before? Had non-Henry typed something into the computer that tripped the light?
I agree with Wendy, I think LOST has just the right amount of mystery. Thank goodness for the internet, though. There are things that we would all miss if we weren’t able to share on such a huge basis. And I spend a lot of time trying to figure things out, so I can’t imagine watching two shows like LOST. Although, I am looking forward to Six Degrees.
Okay, off to read the article that John posted the link to.
Here’s a link to a screen shot of that fellow at the end. Click on the photo for a larger image. It’s not Matthew Fox. He has some resemblance to Jack but he’s about 10 years younger.

I absolutely love lost.. Sawyer is soo fit! phwoar!! Jack is aswell.. I loved The Other 48 Days.. I hate michael 4 shooting Ana Lucia and Libby.. Ana Lucia was a strong,Character.. I hated three miutes.. the flashbacks done my head in!! Love the Finale. I hope Walt and Mchael never come back! but it will be a good story line i they do.
I finally got this all read so I can comment.
Ok. It works so I can talk now. I really thought that guy was Jack, too and I watched it twice. Also I had a theory about the healing properties of the island. You know how people wear magnets either as bracelets or taped on for arthritis and other ailments? I know the Chinese doctors use them. Maybe something about the magnetic field on the island heals people somehow. Wouldn’t that be interesting?
I looked at the picture of non-Jack and I still think it looks like him.
Here are links to pages with photos of the two actors in the final scenes. I think the guy you all think looks like Jack is Len Cordova.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0502653/
and
http://poll.imdb.com/name/nm1827419/
Here is a photo of Len Cordova who played the guy that some of you think looks like Jack:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0502653/
Here is the other guy Alex Petrovitch:
http://poll.imdb.com/name/nm1827419/
I think the guy on the show looks more like Jack than he does the picture of the actor, but, yes, they have both pictures posted on that link that John gave, so I give in. It’s not Jack. But I still say it looks like him.
I find the jack having a twin theory intresting, though i am sure its not that russian guy in fact i am sure that jack does have a twin though it is a girl!
does anyone remember the episode where ana lucia and jacks dad go to that house in sydney? cause when i listened to what jacks dad said to the lady at the house i could make out that he was saying “you have to let me see her”….
Yep, heard that. Some people think that Claire is Jack’s half sister.
Woah. Ive just been watching previous Lost episodes to try an thigure wats going on and i realised that the Widmore Company that Penelope’s father owns is the same company that made the pregnancy test that Sun used, and the same construction company Michael worked for. and DHARMA is a funded by the Hanso company (which i belive that widmore is someone on the board or something ) which is linked to DHARMA. It would also explain how Penelope knows to look for some sort of magnetic signal to find Desmond!
I just got done re-watching the finale, and it seems to me that there was a knowing look exchanged between Jack and Michael as the latter left the dock. I’m thinking that at some point after Jack revealed to the “rescue party” that Michael was leading them into a trap, there was probably an unaired scene (whick will probably be revealed next season) where Michael agreed to an alternate plan which would appear to the Others as though the original “trap” plan had gone as scheduled, Michael would have his son returned assuming the Others kept their word to do so (admittedly a risky assumption at best), but having been informed of Sayid’s participation would somehow rendezvous with him and, using whatever knowledge he (Michael) had of the Other’s encampment, the two of them would work together, perhaps with other losties if they wanted to stretch the storyline longer, to secure the “rescue” party’s freedom. Just thinking off the top of my head.
What leads me to this theory is the scene at the pneumatic tube dump. It seemed orchestrated to appear to anyone watching in the jungle that Michael had led them there as planned, and yet his intentions had already been revealed to the party, so it should have been no surprise at that point in the story that Michael was leading them into a trap. Just spitballing, as it doesn’t seem likely that the party would trust Michael to cooperate with an alternate plan after he had killed two of their own, but there may be an alternate reason for their deaths that may be revealed in a future episode.
if you look back at series 1 on 1 of the episodes. Walt is reading a comic. If you look at the pages there is a polar bear. like the 1s on the island. and on another page there is a island with a force field around it. I think that Walt is creating all the things on the island with his mind. becasue as you no he has some kind of power. N also LOST ROCKS. lol
