"?" Clues and Theories

Thursday May 11, 2006
"?" was a great episode. We found out that Ana-Lucia was really dead and that Libby was still alive, but not for long. What clues did you see? What are your theories? Be the first to post a specific clue or theory here and get full credit in the final documents (which will be published tomorrow).

(1) Lostaway Bonnie says:

Mr. Malik, Joyce’s dad, is the phychic who made sure that Claire was on Flight 815 in episode 1×10.

(2) John Fischer says:

In the orientation film Dr. Mark Wickman says towards the end:

“At the end of your 8-hour shift, proceed to the pala ferry, which will take you back to the barracks.” This is verified by closed captioning.

In both Sinhala and Tamil (languages of India) there are two identical phrases:

Train station: “dumriya pala”
Ferry terminal: “totu pala”

So, it seems “pala” means station or terminal, hence “pala ferry” means “ferry terminal or ferry station.”

If there’s a ferry station there must be someplace on the other end of the line.

(3) John Fischer says:

In the orientation video for the losties hatch, the Swan, the same man identifies himself as Dr. Marvin Candle. Here he’s Dr. Mark Wickman. Same initials. In the swan orientation film he seemed to have a prosthetic arm. Here his arm seems fine.

Also, isn’t one of the other hatched called “The Flame?” ….wickman, candle, flame… interesting

I’ve listned to the taped message the Eko and doctor listened to in Eko’s flashback. It’s hard to hear, but it says something like this:

“Patient female, she’s 161 centimeters, 51.3 kilos. Body prepped and washed by the very lovely Valerie McDurmish.” A female says, “Thank you, Doctor.” The doctor’s voice says something about the Pope and then, “This is a clear case of drowning. I’ll begin with a thoratic-” Screaming.

Who is Valerie McDurmish? She and the doctor seem to have had something going on. I bet we hear her name again.

I didn’t realize it the first time I watched this episode, but in John’s dream of Yemi, when Eko climbs to the top of the cliff and Yemi is in the wheelchair, Yemi says, “Wake up, John,” just before Eko falls.

(6) Lostaway Bonnie says:

Mr. Malik, Claire’s phychic claims that he is a fraud, yet he seemed so convincing in Claire’s flashback. Perhaps he was a fraud, but had a real phychic feeling with Claire’s situation.

(7) John Fischer says:

Or, Bonnie, he’s a plant from Dharma to make sure certain people go to certain places at specific times.

I’m getting really tired of the miraculous healing plot. Locke, Sun and Rose get healed, yet the Marshall, Shannon, Boone, Ana and Libby all die. Kinda selective healing in my opinion.

(8) Lostaway Bonnie says:

But Locke, Jin, and Rose did not have immediate life threatening problems, where as all of the rest of them did. Plus, according to Rose’s would-be healer, there is an energy source for each person, but each energy source won’t help all people. So maybe Locke, Jin, and Rose are lucky to be there, and the others would have been cured had they been at a different energy source.

(9) lostlover says:

So has anyone thought about whether some of the characters will go to the new hatch and watch the video surveillance of what really happened with Michael, the Other, and Libby and Ana-Lucia?

(10) Christine says:

Can someone help me out? My recorder missed the last minute or so of the May 10 Episode (?). What did Libby say to Hurley??

May 11, 2006 at 2:45 pm
(11) Lostaway Bonnie says:

Christine,

All Libby was able to say was, “Michael”. They thought she was just asking if Michael was okay. She tried to say more, but couldn’t before she stopped breathing.

My full recap will be posted shortly.

Lostaway Bonnie…thank you!

(13) Lostaway Bonnie says:

I just had another thought about the phychic, Malkin. Maybe he is a fraud, but his daughter, Joyce, obviously knew about Yemi. Maybe Yemi told her the plane was going to crash and perhaps she told her father. Wanting to get rid of Claire, for whatever reason (maybe his daughter again?), he convinced Claire to get on the plane.

(14) Rae says:

To address all the miraculous stuff and why it didn’t happen to certain people – I think aside from what Bonnie said about them not needing immediate help, Rose, Locke and Jin may be considered “good” and deserving of healing.

As for the ? — I think maybe the Pearl could actually be the experiment. It’snin the middle of all the other hatches, which is where BF Skinner would’ve placed a rat in a maze, right?

I loved it when Eko said they should watch the video again.

I think the psychic said he was a fraud so Eko wouldn’t believe the story and go ahead with his plans to go to LA.

(15) Lostaway Bonnie says:

Ah, the psychic lying to get Eko on Flight 815. That could very well be!

(16) wegotlites.com says:

I think Libby will come back to life. Just as the phychic’s daughter did, thats why libby was in the airport to see “if they were ok” at the time they were talking. Did you notice Eko’s brother was in a wheel chair in JOHN’s dream!

(17) Physics Guide says:

Another thing to consider about the healing – Rose, Jin, and Locke all had conditions before they crashed on the island. What if they were “cleansed” by the process of arriving at the island, but once they’re on the island they’re on their own to some extent.

The only thing that I can think of which would contradict this is that Charlie was not instantly cured of his physical addiction, although there’s a work around for that – he was cured physically, perhaps, but still had the psychological addiction. After he took the heroin again on the island, the physical addiction returned, and that’s why he had physical withdrawal symptoms. Still, it’s kind of a cheat.
